Swisstopo

Swisstopo is the name of the federal Office of topography of Suisse rested by the general Dufour in 1832 in Carouge Geneva. To the head of the office, the general will work on the Carte Dufour which quickly becomes a reference on the matter.

In 1865, Hermann Siegfried becomes the person in charge and moves Swisstopo with Bern about it. He will be also at the origin of the chart which bears its name.

Swisstopo currently employs 270 collaborators with Wabern, close to Bern. Swisstopo deals with updating and publishing the National cards of Switzerland.

The principal scales used are:

  • 1:25000 for walk, the plans of details
  • 1:50000 for the bicycle, the small rounds in the car or to obtain an overall picture at the time of long walks
  • 1:100000 for the motorists
  • 1:200000, 1:300000, 1:500000 and 1:1000000 for the national cards
These charts are updatings every 6 years.

In addition to these charts, Swisstopo publishes various charts sets of themes: let us excurions, excursions with ski, goods cultural, museum, aeronotic… Swisstopo offers also the numerical products.
