The Swiss franc (in German Schweizer Franken , in Italian Free svizzero , in Romanche Franc will svizra ) is the Monnaie used in Suisse and with Liechtenstein. It is composed of 100 centimes ( Rappen in German, centesimi in Italian). Its symbol is france but one often uses his code ISO CHF .

History

Following the creation of the Swiss Confederation in 1848, only the Federal state had become responsible for the striking of the currencies. The first coins were struck as of 1850, replacing the various cantonal currencies then in circulation.

Its initial value was of parity with the Franc French (frankly germinal).

Between 1865 and 1926, in the facts until the First World War, the Latin Monetary Union bound the Lire Italian, the Belgian Franc, the Greek Drachme, the Franc French and the Swiss franc which could be officially used in each one of these five countries.

With the abolition of the customs union and monetarist with the Austria, in 1919, the Liechtenstein adopted the Swiss franc like official currency.

The banknotes were initially issued by cantonal banks. As of 1907 the national bank Suisse obtains the monopoly for the manufacture of the tickets.

Following its adhesion with the the IMF in 1992, the Suisse was seen forced to give up the cover gold Swiss franc (hitherto of 40%), registered in old the Constitution. This change was included in the new Constitution coming into effect on January 1st 2000.

  • 10 centimes (seldom called “a batz”)
  • 20 centimes (sometimes called “four pennies”)
  • ½ frankly (always called “50 centimes”)
  • 1 franc
  • 2 francs
  • 5 francs (seldom called “hundred pennies” or sometimes “a thune”)

The part of 1 centime was struck until in 2006, but was put except course as of on January 1st 2007.

The part of 2 centimes was struck until in 1974, but was put except course as of on January 1st 1997.

The parts of 10,20 and 100 francs out of gold were struck until in 1949, but are not any more in circulation because of their face value much more low only their gold value.

Parts of 25 and 50 francs out of gold, were struck of 1954 with 1957, but were never put in circulation.

Parts commemorative of 5,10,20,50,100 and 200 francs exist and can be used for the commercial transactions, although that is exceptional.

Long life of life

The oldest Swiss part officially in circulation is the 10 centimes of 1879 (even alloy, even reason).

The oldest part of 20 centimes officially in circulation is that of 1939. The parts of 20 centimes out of pure nickel, struck between 1881 and 1938 exactly similar to current are out-course since January 1st 2004.

The alloy of the parts of 5 centimes was changed into 1981 (In the past Cupronickel, lately Bronze of aluminum).

The reason for the parts of 1 and 2 centimes was changed into 1948.

The reason for the parts from ½, 1 & 2 francs goes back to 1874. Their alloy was changed into 1968 (In the past Argent, lately Cupronickel), but not the reason nor dimensions. The stars surrounding Helvetia on the Avers symbolize the Swiss Cantons: there are 22 stars until in 1982, then 23 stars starting from 1983, following the creation of the Canton of the Jura.

The reason for the parts of 5 francs goes back to 1922. Their size was reduced in 1931. The new part has the weight of 3 francs. The alloy was changed in 1968 (In the past Argent, lately Cupronickel), but not the reason nor dimensions. Parts of 5 francs silver were still produced in 1969

Because of the identical reasons and dimensions, it can occasionally sometimes happen to receive parts older than those officially in circulation. The silver coins in general are still accepted well that not having more legal tender.

Banknotes

This series, which was put in circulation between 1995 and 1998, put an end to the preceding one, which contained a ticket of 500 francs in the place of that of 200 francs.

In 2005, the Swiss national Bank announced that it began the development of the 9th series of tickets, the proportion of the security measures already revealed and the time of creation imposing ticket to begin again as of this moment the creation of new tickets.

For one period, a ticket of 2000 francs was distributed to some specimens by UBS for a purely decorative use.

Series of tickets emitted

The 7th series (series of reserve) only recently was published. it was designed to be emitted if the series which has course underwent too many falsifications.
