Swiss districts
Contrary in organized States in a centralist way, in Suisse the federalist is completely free in his internal organization. This is why, each canton (or in demicanton in the old canton of Basle) is free in its structural organization and designation for the level between the districts (sometimes grouped in areas in the Canton of Neuchâtel, or subdivided in half-districts in the Canton of Were worth) and the common.
Name
The principal cantons are subdivided in several districts (in German of Bezirke , in Italian it distretti ).In German, they can however take various designations: they are offices ( of Ämter ) in the Canton of Lucerne or the offices of district ( of Amtsbezirke ) in the Canton of Bern.
The districts are used in theory only for the administration of the courts (a court by district). In the cantons of the Grison , the districts have in their own tax and political sovereignty.
Renunciation of districts in ten cantons
Ten of the 26 cantons are not subdivided in districts: they are the cantons of Uri, of Obwald, Nidwald, Appenzell Rhodos-External, Glaris, Zoug, Basle-City and Geneva for historical and practical reasons (they all are of the cantons of small surface). The Canton of Schaffhouse in 1999 and Saint-Gall in 2002 also gave up the system of district.
