The Swiss Liberal party (PLS) is a Political party founded Suisse the October 8th 1913.

History

The PLS is located in the line of the radical-democratic party created in 1892. What remains Center with the federal Parliament forms in 1893 a “liberal-democratic group”, which occupies 13 seats at the National council in 1911, including two Protestant conservatives with BE and 3 liberal-conservatives. In 1913 he is born officially but part of its federations do not survive the second world war.

It since is mainly established in the French cantons Protestant of Neuchâtel, Vaud and Geneva like with Basle-City. In the years 1960 the party tried to widen its base with of these 4 cantons: from 1961 to 1977, it took the name of liberal-democratic Union, in order to attract individual members coming from other areas. The development in the Valais was only the really profitable one.

Sections also exist in Valais, where it has some deputies with the Grand the Council, with Freiburg, Bern and Zurich.

On the level of the federal authorities, the liberal party obtained its first representation with the Council of the States with Mr Auguste Turrettini in 1866, for the canton of Geneva. Since and until 1999, the party with always represented with the Council of the States almost without interruptions with a vast majority of representation for the Geneva, followed Vaud and finally less Neuchâtel. As for the National council, the party is present since 1866, with the election of Albert Wessel like first liberal deputy to sit at Bern. Since this election, the party did not cease being present in the hemicycle.

At the cantonal level, the liberal party counts 1 Conseiller State in the following cantons Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel and Basle-City. On the same basis, the party is represented at the Parliament of these cantons, as at the Parliament of the Canton of Were worth. By tradition, the Genevese section of the party is that which is represented and which counts the greatest number of deputies in Switzerland.

On the right than the radical-democratic Left (PRD), the PLS counts 4 national advisers since the elections of October 2003 and forms from now on a common parliamentary group with the PRD. An ideological bringing together at the federal level led to the creation of a common structure the June 25th 2005: the radical liberal Union.

The PLS counted only one federal adviser to date, Gustave Ador, which sat there between 1917 and 1919. It is chaired by Claude Ruey and counts 10.000 members.

Standpoint

The Swiss Liberal party as well as the various cantonal sections which compose it, defend of the basically liberal and humanistic positions, wanting to put the man at the center of the considerations. Privileging the free enterprise, the private economy, the control of expense of the state and the monitoring of its management. It stresses also the importance of training and education. Like many right parties, he preaches for a security policy for the good being of the people.

He actively supported the entry of Switzerland with UNO in 2002.
