Swinthila
Swinthila is a king Visigoth of Spain which reigns of 621 with 631/633. Born towards 580, he is the son of the king Récarède and the franque princess Chlodoswinthe of Austrasie, girl of the queen Brunehilde, itself princess wisigothe. He serves the king Sisebuth in his fight against the Byzantine then seizes the power after having reversed his successor, the king Récarède II, with the capacity recently, thanks to the support of the wisigothic nobility. Later, it will associate his son Ricimer with the throne.
Militarily, it fights actively the Vascons in the north of the Iberian peninsula and founds the fortress of Olite to fight against their incursions into the valley of the Ebre. But it fights especially the Byzantines in the south, seeking to expel them definitively peninsula; in 622, it takes and destroys Carthagène, Byzantine high-place then étand its domination until Cadiz and Valence. In 624, the Byzantine troops are definitively driven out of Spain.
However, in spite of its military successes, it causes the dissatisfaction with the nobility because of her severity but also the dissatisfaction with the catholic Église , in particular confiscant the goods of the latter. It is finally driven out capacity by a conspiracy carried out by noble claiming to the throne, Sisenand, governor of the Gothie (Septimanie) supported by part of the nobility but also by the mérovingien Dagobert, king of the Francs, who brings his assistance to him.
Sisenand seizes the power and in 633 its reign is finally recognized with the 4th council of Tolède, thus marking the beginning of elective hispano-wisigothic monarchy but also marking a true turning for Spain: the kings, elected by an assembly of noble but also by representatives of the Church, will be controlled by the latter.
Swinthila is the same year excommunicated and dispossessed of its goods. He dies one year later (634) with Tolède, where he had the authorization to reside at it.
The crown of Swinthila is currently with the National museum of the Middle Ages, in Paris.
