Swinging (people)

The Balantes are an ethnicity especially present in Guinea-Bissau, but also with the Senegal, particularly on average Casamance, and in Gambia.

Ethnomyme

The Ethnonyme Balante comes from I balanta , which means “they refused”. At the beginning of the 16th century they had indeed refused to follow the king Koli Tenguella at the time of its increase towards the Fouta-Toro.

Language

Their language is the swinging, which belongs to the nigéro-Congolese Langues. The swingingone is spoken in south-west about Senegal, the swingingone in Guinea-Bissau and Gambia.

Because of this origin the patronyms often have a Portuguese consonance, for example Lopez, Marques, Preira, Sadio, Vieira, Yalla.

Population

The Swinging ones live mainly in the forest zone and close to the coast.

In 2002 106  000 people spoke the balanta-ganja in Senegal. 393.000 were expressed in balanta-kentohe, including 367.000 in Guinea-Bissau.
