History
Sweet Smoke was created in 1967 in Brooklyn (New York). The founding members of the group are Andrew Dershin, Michael Paris, Victor Sacco, Jay Dorfman and Marvin Kaminovitz. Sacco will be replaced a little later by Steve Rosenstein. The complete name of the group was then Sweet Smoke off the Happy Plant Pipeful .
With its beginnings, the group occurs mainly in small clubs of the United States, but with its image of Hippie and its name “Soft Smoke”, it is not able to take a lead in the fronts of the scene. The group thus decides to be exiled in Europe in 1969 and benefits from it to leave its first album to Germany, Just has Poke in 1970.
Sweet Smoke was especially known for its performances live and its long impromptu pieces (jam). It is in this spirit that the two pieces of Just has Poke , Baby Night and Silly Sally , which lasts approximately 16 minutes each one, was produced. Baby Night is besides probably the most known piece of the group since it is a perfect synthesis of the creativity of Michael Paris. The second piece, Silly Sally , is as for him especially known for length (more than five minutes) solo of battery of Dorfman to which were added effects stereo and of phasing.
Thanks to its concerts and with the musicians whom it invites on scene, the group sees his popularity growing in an extraordinary way. However, after the exit of its second album, Darkness to Light (1973), in which the acoustic Guitare is development, of the tensions start to appear within the group. Paris and Rosenstein leave it and after the exit of an album live in 1974, the remaining members separate. They move away all from the world of the music but meet only one and single time in 1999.
