The Swedish Académie ( Svenska Akademien ) is one of the royal Académies of Sweden. It was founded in 1786 by the king Gustave III in order to promote the cultural size of the Swedish kingdom. It is inspired by the French Academy and counts 18 members resulting from the medium of the letters and the Langues (writer S, Intellectuel S, Historien S, Linguiste S, Philologue S…). All are elected with life by co-optation. The currency of the Academy is “  Talent and Goût  ” ( Snille och Smak in Swedish).

Its main aim is to serve the purity, strength and the majesty of the Swedish Langue. It publishes two accordingly dictionnaires :

  • Svenska Akademiens Ordlista (SAOL)  : a work in only one volume;
  • Svenska Akademiens Ordbok (SAOB)  : a work on all the Swedish words published in several volumes. In 1786, the Swedish Academy decided that a dictionary would be published. The first part was finished in 1898 and the dictionary should be supplemented in 2017.

Since 1791, it has in load the drafting of the Swedish official journal, the Post- och Inrikes Tidningar . Since 1901, the Swedish Academy elects and designates every year the prize winner of the Nobel Prize of literature.

The Academy meets in the building of Börshuset which it has in the old city of Stockholm. It is here that is announced every year the name of the prizes winner of different the Nobel Prize.
