Swearword

A Juron is a term or a short expression, more or less coarse, vulgar or blasphématoire, of which one is used for oneself to give an intensity particular to a speech, that is to express what one feels vis-a-vis a given situation, to express its anger, its indignation or its surprise (in the latter case it will act as Interjection) or to give in a general way more force to a matter.

A swearword can possibly be interpreted as a Insulte according to the circumstances in which he is uttered. However, in a general way, the swearword is a reaction in front of a situation and does not aim a particular recipient in theory.

Formation of the swearwords

The swearwords are not neutral words relative with the remainder of the vocabulary. They are generally prohibited words or referring to things or acts prohibited or hidden. In Anthropology and Psychology, the “swearwords” and “coarse words” concern the primal obsession of the population in which they have course.

The swearwords thus are strongly connoted culturally, and will vary according to the company concerned and its inhibitions.

In the human society, one can generally note the swearwords related to the following elements:

The body and body functions

They are here the “ashamed” parts of the body or in any case hidden in theory or of body functions of comparable nature: shit, foutre, and all the field of the Scatologie in heritage of our ancestors the large monkeys which “piss” and “shit” in derision and to insult the other (cf human ethology of Irenaus eibl Ebelsfeld).

Sexuality or the sexual organs constitutes almost a field with share, so much is broad the coarse vocabulary and the number of swearwords (and of insults) which use the field of the sexuality, which is to indicate a body ( idiot ), an act, possibly considered as interdict or deviating ( asshole ) or another unvoiced comment in relation ( whore, brothel ), the standing of the maternal line ( wire of whore ), etc

The religion

Many old swearwords are blasphématoires. When the Church exerted its at least moral authority on all the company, it was interdict with faithful to call upon God, therefore to swear, and to use wrongly and through words of the religious vocabulary. To swear was thus a means of being opposed to the authority of the Church. To exclaim “Name of God! ” was to launch a challenge to the Church and to mark its independence.

In these old swearwords, one often notes a deformation intended to hide the reference to God or the religion by deforming the swearword: ; jarnidieu/jarnibleu (I disavow God), Morbleu ( by God death! ), Palsambleu ( by Blood God! ), name of devil ( name of god ). One notes the number of occurrence or the name of God is replaced by blue . Hundreds of swearwords were thus created by deformation, combination, substitution, truncation, etc

In the same way, with the Quebec, the swearwords are often words of the Catholic religion deformed and used in manner blasphématoire, and are named sacrings.

Others prohibited

There is no limit with the interdicts which the swearwords or the insults can violate. Thus, whereas the dominant culture is opposed with force to the Racisme and even, its expression punishes sometimes penally, while the concept even of race is called into question, one can note the frequent use of the word “ race ” in the insults, the swearwords or the interjections ( that tears your race, whore of your race, asshole of your race ). Did the use become so frequent about it that it was judged that “ Enculé of your race ” was not (more?) a racist insult.

Functions and uses of the swearword

In a general way, the swearword is an exit liberator. It can be the expression of a movement of mood or a strong emotion. The swearword then expresses anger, the surprise or possibly the joy. The swearwords used within this framework generally interchangeable and are emptied of their direction, the situation being without relationship with the original direction of the swearword used.

The swearword is used to give more weight or of force to the remarks and the sincerity of guarantees some what one says. To say: “What a beautiful car! ” is less strong than “What a whore of beautiful motor! ”. In this function, the swearword can have a claiming function: it allows the assertion of oneself and its independence by integrating words prohibited in its speech. In the same order of idea, the use of specific swearwords can mark integration in a group. Those are integrated then within the same framework as the constitution of a Argot or a '' to speak '' contemporary. When the swearword is integrated in a way persistent into the speech, it is then often related to the poverty of the vocabulary of the speaker who uses a swearword by ignorance of the exact word.

The swearword is employed especially in a context private or friendly, in theory less within the framework of the social life, governed by the rules of courtesy, the swearword is done rarer. It is however precisely within a framework where it is excluded in theory that the swearword can have the most weight like act of transgression. However, during second half of the 20th century, the use of the swearwords was spread in all the social classes and all the categories of individuals, and its permanent presence, for example in films, ends up reducing their impact. Several reasons can be mentioned to explain this phenomenon: easing or loss of the rules of courtesy and courtesy, culture of larger permissiveness, freedom of larger tone, impoverishment of the vocabulary. Thus, the use of coarse words like “shit” or “idiot” really any more does not scandalize while the sacrings shock less in Quebec. One however notes a tendency to return to a certain form of social control of the swearword.
