The Latin name of this species is often written in a whimsical way. Indeed, Juan Ignacio Molina described it under the name of Anas Melanocoripha , name incorrect which was rectified later on in Cygnus melanocorypha .

Description

It measures between 102 and 124 cm. Its plumage is white, except the neck and the head which are black, the adults have a red bump at the base of the nozzle.

Habitat

He lives the south of the America south, islands Falkland until the south-east of the Brésil. It is an inhabitant of the lakes, fresh water marsh and lagoons as well as brackish.

Biology

It is a gregarious bird except during the period of nesting where the males become very aggressive. The nest is placed in the vegetation close to water. Among all the swans, it is that which is most awkward with ground because of the brevity of its legs. The southernmost populations are migrating, wintering mainly in the north of the Argentine.

Populations

The population lies between 26.000 and 100.000 individuals. This species is not threatened.
