Swan trumpet

The swan trumpet ( Cygnus buccinator ) is one of largest the swan S originating in North America.

This Oiseau has a white plumage, a long neck, a short Bec and black which extends to the eyes and from short black Patte S. Its Envergure can reach 3 meters. The cygneaux ones have a Duvet gray which becomes white plumage after the first year.

Their habitat of reproduction is mainly located in great not very major stretches of water and the broad rivers of the North-West of America, in particular in Alaska. The female often lays 3 to 9 eggs in a nest (made monticule of branches and plants) on an small island, a den of beaver S or muskrats or a floating rig. The swan trumpet can use the same nest of the years during and the swans often couple themselves for the life. The young people are able to swim very quickly after their birth but can fly only from 3 or 4 months.

In its habitat more in the south, this bird can be Sédentaire. The swans based more in north migrate towards the Pacifique coast and the American midwest, flying towards the south in formation out of V.

The swans trumpet nourish watery plants which they catch while swimming, rocking their head under water in order to reach the submerged vegetation. During the winter, they can also nourish grass and seeds in the meadows. The young people are initially nourished of Insecte S and small Crustacé S, and change for a mode vegetarian after a few months.

The adults moult during the summer and temporarily lose their feathers of flight, the female right after the blossoming of eggs, the male one month later, when the female finished its moult.

The name of swan trumpet comes from the cry which the bird pushes and which resembles the sound of a trumpet.

The swan trumpet was present at the origin in very whole North America but was driven out until its almost extinction at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Years 1800, it was driven out for its eggs and its meat, but also for its feathers which were used for the writing and its sleeping bag which was used with manufacture as pillows. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the populations of swans trumpet multiplied and of the efforts were committed in order to reintroduce it in other parts of its natural habitat, in particular the area of the Big lakes in North America. The current population is estimated at 18.000 individuals, the species is completely protected on the unit from its surface from distribution.
