Swahililand

The Swahililand (or Wituland , Witu , Vitu ) was a territory of 3000 km ² roughly in the East Africa centered on the town of Witu, the port of the island of Lamu, in the north of the mouth of the river Tana in what today is the Kenya.

History

Founded in 1858 by the sultanate of the island of Paste after several failed attempts at takeover of the coast. The sultanate of Witu becomes a refuge for the slaves fleeing Zanzibar and for this reason must undergo the attacks of the sultan of Zanzibar, directed by the sultan of Oman. The sultanate of Zanzibar will spend later a few years under British protectorate .

In 1885, the brothers Clemens and Gustav Denhardt negotiate a treaty with Ahmed ibn Fumo Bakari, the first mfaume of Witu which yields on April 8th, 5,18 km ² with the Tanned-Gesellschaft. The sultanate becomes then a German Protectorat , also named Deutsch-Witu . May 27th. The German government is represented by its residents Gustav Denhardt of April 8th 1885 at July 1st 1890 and by his assistant Clemens Andreas Denhardt.

By an agreement of June 18th 1890, the Treated of Heligoland-Zanzibar, the sultan passes under British protectorate and on June 1st, Germany gives up its protectorate. The the United Kingdom integrates it in the British East Africa in spite of the protests of the inhabitants. Little time later, several German merchants is killed by a British punitive forwarding. Of July 31st 1893 with 1920, the flag of the sultanate is red with the Union Jack in the center.
