Sverker Ier of Sweden

Sverker 1st Old the ( Sverker den äldre ) king of Sweden of 1130 with 1156.

Towards 1130, Sverker 1st Kolsson, called den äldre (the old one), was elected king among the members of an big family of the area of Alvastra in the Comté of Östergötland. He is sometimes regarded as the son of the usurper Köl (Erik Arsäel). To legitimate its accession with the throne near its subjects, he will marry successively the women of two of his predecessors, Ulvid Hakonsdatter (1148 †), veuvre of Inge II den Yngre Halstensson, then towards 1145 Richiza (Ryksa) of Poland, girl of Boleslaw III. The first gives him three children including two wire, Karl and Johann. Richiza, famous for its exceptional beauty, had been married with Magnus {{Ier}} den Starke Nielsson, then with prince Volodar Glebovitch of Minsk. It will give him a son, Burislev.

Very favorable to the church, Sverker 1st calls upon the cistercians which develop the first monatères country: Alvastra (1143), Nydala (1144) which it founds with its Ulvid wife, then in 1150 Varnhem.

In 1152 his/her son puiné Johann during a forwarding with the Denmark removes the woman of noble and the sister of the latter of which it makes his mistresses. The Danish king Sven III Erikssen (1157 †) to avenge the national honor that it considers ridiculed undertakes an invasion of Sweden, in spite of the peace overtures of the king and the death of the prince in 1153/1154.

Sverker Ier generally resides in its field of Alvastra and rests on the Götar . He sees to protest against him an applicant supported by the Svear Érik Jedvardsson. It is however at the instigation of a Danish prince Magnus Henriksson that the king is assassinated the December 25th 1156 with Alvastra.

Sveker Ier also leaves to its first union a girl whose name is not known for us. She marries in 1156 Knut V of Denmark Magnussen king de Jütland since 1147, and Co-king of Denmark with Sven III of 1154 to her death in 1157.
