Johann Adolph Hasse (March 25th 1699 - December 23rd 1783) was a German Compositeur .

Biography

Beginnings in Germany

He was born with Bergedorf not far from Hamburg and accepted his first musical training of his father. As it had a pretty voice of Ténor, it chooses the career Lyrique and entered the company of opera of the Gänsemarkt directed by Reinhard Keiser, that one even or Georg Friedrich Haendel had played as a second violin a few years before. Its success pointed out it to be committed by the theater of the Court of Brunswick-Lunebourg and it was there that in 1723 it began its career from type-setter of operas with his first work entitled Antigonus .

Italy

In front of the success gained by this first composition, the duke decided to send Hasse in Italy to perfect his formation there; thus it arrived at Naples in 1724 to work there with Porpora; it seems however that he badly meant himself with the latter, whether it is in the artistic or personal plan. On the other hand, it bound friendship with Alessandro Scarlatti, which was largely older than him, and thanks to which it accepted its first order: it was about a serenade with two votes, which were sung at a family of commercial rich person by two of the most famous Italian singers of time, the castrato Farinelli and the Signora Tesi.

This event establishes its reputation. It became soon very famous and its opera Sesostrato , written for the Royal Opéra of Naples in 1726 made known its name in all Italy. It went to Venice in 1727 and bound a idylle with the famous singer of operas Faustina Bordoni, who had been born in Venice in 1700 and whom it married in 1730.

Voyages

The couple of artists settled little time in Dresden, answering an interesting offer of munificent Électeur of Saxony Auguste II. Hasse remained two years there; it turned over then to Italy then, in 1733, went to London. It was courted there by the aristocratic faction anti-Haendel which wanted to make him play the part of competitor to this famous rival and counter his companies as regards opera. In a modest and lucid way, Hasse declined this proposal but remained nevertheless in London to direct there the repetitions of its opera Artaserse (of which the first representation had taken place in Venice in 1730). During all this time, Faustina had remained in Dresden or it had become the favorite singer of the public and favorite very the court of the Voter, allured by his voice and the remainder. However her legitimate husband remained attached to it, that it was authorized to see only time with other. The Voter died in 1733 and Hasse settled for good in Dresden until in 1763. On this date, Hasse and his wife were congédiés Court without any pension, the transitory prince-voter Friedrich Christian (ten months of reign) being confronted with enormous financial problems.

But Hasse was still too young to rest on its bay-trees. It left for Vienna with its family and still created several operas which lengthened the list of those that it had written. Its last scenic work was the opera Ruggiero composed at the time of the marriage of the Archiduc Ferdinand with Milan. On this same occasion a work of Mozart was carried out, which was then 14 years old, and Hasse noticed with accuracy: “this young man will exceed us all”. To like his wife, Hasse ends up being established in Venice from where she was native; it is there that he died.

During all its career it did not compose less than 120 opera S as well as Oratorio S, Cantate S and all kinds of instrumental parts. During the seat of Dresden by the Prussians in 1760, most of its manuscripts were destroyed by a fire, whereas it was to be about it published a complete edition with the expenses of the Voter of Saxony. Some of its works, with the number of which the opera Alcide Al Bivio (1760), were published and the libraries of Vienna and Dresden have the manuscripts of some others.

The retirement

The instrumentation of Hasse does not exceed the rather poor level of the majority of the musicians of its time and its units are generally hardly of interest. It missed also dramatic talent, but its melodies are pleasant and easy, it is what enabled him to reach with such a notoriety. The two airs that the melancholic person king d' Espagne Philippe V asked Farinelli to sing the every day to him during ten years were of its composition. With regard to his wife, Faustina, it is enough to add that she was, to the unanimous dires the criticisms of the time (and among them Charles Burney) one of best the singers of this time which did not miss any. The exact date of its death is not known. It is thought that it preceded by little that of her husband.
