Svarog

Svarog (in Polish Swaróg, in Russian Сварог or Соварог) is the god of the Sun, the sky, fire and the metallurgy in the Slavic Mythologie. Its name means into Slavic " clair" and " lumineux" and comes from the verb *svariti (to forge, to melt) of Indo-European origin. Are attached the Sanscrit " to it; svarga" (sky) and Persian " xwar" (sun).

Myth

The legends relating to Svarog go up in VIIIe- VIe front century J. - C. when the Slavic tribes started to practice agriculture. Svarog is the resplendent and creative sun, god of the light. According to the various Slavic tribes and the areas, it also receives the name of Dajbog (Belobog), god which fertilizes the fields, or Svarojtich which represents terrestrial fire, protective god of the blacksmiths, or Svantovít, warlike, sovereign god of Slavic of the Baltic.

According to certain theories, Svarog was a crowned craftsman, father of the other gods and creators of the Sun. Its fire if was crowned that it was interdict to shout or swear when it was lit. In the popular tradition, it is represented in the form of a winged dragon or a Serpent fire-eater, entity occupying an essential function in the Slavic Cosmogonie. One owes him the introduction of the order into the Universe and his subdivision in three kingdoms (Jav, Prav and VOR). According to the legends, Svarog, associated with the capacity fertilizing and sexual fire, fought against Zmeï, gigantic sanguinary snake which killed without reason, or a dragon polycéphale, symbol of the disorder. After subjecthaving subjected it using grips of blacksmith, Svarog used it like swing-plow to separate the world from alive (Jav) from that of dead (VOR), thus founding the order (Prav). From this moment, Zmeï reigned in the sphere of deaths while Svarog is established in the celestial field. In certain myths, the furrow traced by the plow became the river Smorodina and Zmeï became the guard of the bridge of Kalinov.

For some, Svarog is not the father of all the gods but only of:

  • Svarojitch , spirit of the hearth, whose worship was widespread especially among the Slavic ones of the Baltic (certain sources mention Svarojitch and Svarog like only one and single god),
  • Dajbog , god of the Sun, the richness, of abundance,
  • Radigost , guard of the city and the economy, venerated especially at the Polabes.

Other beliefs

In the Christianisme Svarog is associated with Saint-Damien, Saint-Like and the archangel Saint Michel.

In certain beliefs of the Néo-paganism, he is the supreme god and the central element of the Holy Trinity (Triglaf). He completed the creation of the world while bringing Prav there. Its crowned animals are the Bœuf with gilded horns, the Cheval, the Sanglier and the Faucon called Varagna. According to Jakobson, Svarog is one of the names taboo of the crowned falcon of the eyes of fire. Svarog perhaps compared with Odin N of the Scandinavian Mythology or with Hermes of the Greek Mythology by their influence on their respective cultures.
