Svarabhakti

The svarabhakti is a phonetic Modification which indicates the appearance of a support vowel in a group of consonants, aiming at facilitating the pronunciation of it. It is a case of Anaptyxe. According to the languages, it can be a question of a regular phenomenon or a transitory phonetic accident. One speaks about svarabhaktic vowel , more rarely of svarabhaktic appearance of a vowel . The svarabhaktic vowel is in general a/ə/; it is about a/ə/ svarabhaktic (just as there are the dumb /ə/, the/ə/of support, etc).

Origin of the word

Svarabhakti comes from the name Sanskrit svarabhaja indicating a Voyelle which divides a word into two ( svar = “vowel” and bhaja = “to divide”). It undoubtedly comes from this language because the phenomenon was observed for the first time in Sanskrit (the grammar sanskrite is one of the oldest reflection of the world on the Langue).

Description of the phenomenon

A svarabhaktic vowel is a vowel created because of the linguistic context of a word and which interposes between two Syllabe S. This phenomenon is due either to a Relâchement popular or childish of the language, or with a phonetic context which makes necessary the appearance of this vowel. It can be also due to the Accent Locuteur.

Thus, in If I played, I would lose much money , the word would lose will be marked /p ɛrdərɛ/(as if he were written perderais ). The appearance of this/ə/between /d/ and /r/ is due to the difficulty in pronouncing three consonants of continuation; moreover the presence of two phonemes/ɛ/which resemble to him, thus especially that the analogy with the other forms of Conditionnel in - will erai ( I would eat ), can prevent the speakers from regarding this faulty appearance as shocking (contrary to partridge , /pr ɛdəri/, which is more easily shocking). The reason and the location of this appearance vary of course according to the linguistic practices of the speaker (see Accent).

Such a/ə/appears in general in a context including/understanding a /r/, and more still a /r/ precedent an explosive: boring could indeed be marked by a speaker of French native tongue /bar əbɑ̃/without same as this last realizes there, whereas the Brabant is more easily correctly marked /brab ɑ̃/, without/ə/svarabhaktic, /r/ entering in conflict with no other consonant.

The/ə/svarabhaktic is in general not discriminating for the direction of the mot.
