Suzhou

Suzhou (Chinese simplified: 苏州; traditional Chinese: 蘇州; Pinyin: Sūzhōu , also called Know-Cabbage or Soo-Chow ) is a city of the province Jiangsu in the east of the China. Located on the course of the Yangzi Jiang and not far from the Tai Hu, the city is only to one hundred kilometers of Shanghai.

In Suzhou one speaks the Dialecte about Suzhou of the group of the dialects of Taihu of the wu.

Suzhou is one of the oldest cities of the basin of the Chang Jiang, and the cradle of the Culture wu.

Suzhou is also known to be the Capitale of the Soie.

Because of its many channels, Suzhou is called the Venice Is. The two cities are twinned besides. In addition, of many traditional gardens are disseminated on its territory.

Today it counts more than two million inhabitants. It develops with a new district and two very large industrial parks.

It is the Ville of birth of the Minister for Finance, Jin Renqing.

The Revenu per capita amounts to 3680$ in 2003, that is to say the 25th row in China. According to words allotted to Chaoying, poet of the Dynasty Yuan (1279 - 1368): “with the sky there is the Paradis, on ground there are Suzhou and Hangzhou”. (Chinese: 上有天堂, 下有苏杭; Pinyin: shàng yǒu tiāntáng, xià yǒu sū háng).

City of fish and rice

Suzhou is located near the Lake Tailhu of the Grand channel, the fish is thus easy to sin near the city. The relatively moderate climate and the fertile ground of the area make that rice was cultivated very early, approximately 6000 years ago.

Town of gardens

Suzhou has many famous gardens, The Humble Administrator' S Garden (the garden of the policy of simple), The Garden off Couple' S Retreat (the garden of the reprocessed couple), The Garden off Meditation (the garden of the harmony) and the Masters off Nets Garden (the garden of the Master of the nets) are in the list of the world cultural heritage of the the United Nations. On the whole, 8 gardens are classified by UNESCO.

City of silk

As of the century, Suzhou was famous for its production of silk fabrics, the industrial center for the delta of the Yangtze. The embroidery of Suzhou was practiced since the Dynastie Song, it was one of the four principal schools in China. Suzhou shelters in addition a museum of silk.

Town of bridges and pagodas

Marco Polo would have said that Suzhou had: 6000 bridges on its many channels. It was exaggerated, a plan dating from the Song dynasty shows 314 of them. Nowadays there are approximately 160 bridges in the city and as much in periphery. The twin pagodas and the pagoda of the temple of North are re-elected, the latter was built at the time of the Dynastie Ming.

Town of culture

The Chinese opera Kunqu has its origin in the area of Suzhou. The city is also known for its sung ballades, Suzhou pingtan .

Economy

In 2005, total GDP was of 241,1 billion Yuan S, and the GDP per capita of: 40887 yuans.

The city-prefecture of Suzhou exerts its jurisdiction on eleven subdivisions - six districts and five city-counties  :
  • the district of Jinchang - 金阊区 Jīnchāng Qū   ;
  • the district of Canglang - 沧浪区 Cānglàng Qū   ;
  • the district of Pingjiang - 平江区 Píngjiāng Qū   ;
  • the district of Huqiu - 虎丘区 Hǔqiū Qū   ;
  • the district of Wuzhong - 吴中区 Wúzhōng Qū   ;
  • the district of Xiangcheng - 相城区 Xiàngchéng Qū   ;
  • the town of Wujiang - 吴江市 Wújiāng Shì   ;
  • the town of Kunshan - 昆山市 Kūnshān Shì   ;
  • the town of Taicang - 太仓市 Tàicāng Shì   ;
  • the town of Changshu - 常熟市 Chángshú Shì   ;
  • the town of Zhangjiagang - 张家港市 Zhāngjiāgǎng Shì .
