Suze

The Suze is a bitter containing yellow gentians and with the color gold.

Characteristics

  • Mixture of infusion and spirit of gentian (including 50% of wild roots), aromatic extracts of macerated plants, and supplemented many extracts of aromatic plants.

History

  • 1795, creation of Rousseau distilling, Laurens and Moureaux with Houses-Alfort
  • 1885, the distiller Fernand Moureaux wishes to make apértif who would not be wine-based, it with the idea distill roots of gentians.
    • It repurchases the formula in Suisse
  • 1889, the Suze mark is created with its famous bottle. It is at the time a strong alcohol (32°, 80 G of sugar/liter)
  • 1912, Picasso makes a joining “Glass and bottle of Suze”.
  • 1945, change it does not titrate any more that with 16° and has 200 G sweetens /litre
  • 1965, distilling is bought by the group Pernod-Ricard
  • 1992, Suze creates screen printed bottles sold in a limited number of specimens.

Origins of the name

  • the origin of the name is not defined, indeed, it would owe its name in Suzanne Gaspard, sister-in-law of the inventor or in the name of a running river in Switzerland, the Suze.

  • only with or without ice
  • accompanied by an orange or lemon disc
  • with a liquor feature of blackcurrant (“bottom of breeches”)
  • with syrup feature of cane, freezes
  • 1/3 Suze 2/3 juices of Agrume (grapefruit, orange) and freezes
