Suwon

Suwon (Suwon-if) is the capital and more gande provincial town of Gyeonggi in South Korea. Suwon is located approximately 30 km at the south of Seoul, on the named railway line Gyeongbu. It is also accessible in less than one hour since the center from Seoul by the line number 1 of the subway. Some call it the city of Korean football, because of the club Suwon Samsung Bluewings, which is that which has the most fans in South Korea. It counts with the census of 2005 1.105.953 inhabitants.

History

King Jeongjo made in 1796 an attempt to establish the capital with Suwon, by building the Hwaseong fortress, which surrounded the whole city and was to keep fall it from his/her father. The construction of the fortress, which exists still today, was built while taking the advice of the philosopher Jeong Yag-yong. It belongs to the world heritage of UNESCO. Strong growth of the city, which is suburbs of Seoul today made it overflow very beyond the ramparts.

Food

The kalbi of Suwon is a famous alternative of this dish (of beef roasted accompanied by many additional dishes) which one finds in all Korea.

Teaching

Suwon counts several universities, of which the faculty of agronomy of the National university of Seoul.

Leisures

A football stadium " Suwon World Cup Stadium" was built for the football world cup of 2002. The club Suwon Samsung Bluewings there plays and gained the national championship in 2004. The team of baseball Hyundai Unicorns plays Suwon.
