Susmiou is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

The grounds of the commune are sprinkled by the Gave d' Oloron, affluent of the Gave of Pau, and by its tributary, the Lausset and by the affluent of this last, the riu of Carrié.

Toponymy

The toponym Susmiou appears in the forms Known-Menour (XIIe century, according to Pierre de Marca), Susmeor (XIIIe century, Fors de Béarn), Feels-Katerine Susmioo (1385, notaries of Navarrenx), the abadie-susan of Susmio , Susmio , Suusmioo and Susmyon (respectively 1535,1536,1538 and 1546, reformation of Béarn).

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted two laic abbeys, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn: the abadie-jusan and the abadie-susan of Susmio .
In 1385, Susmiou counted 18 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Navarrenx.
The Baronnie of Gabaston, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, was made up of Angous, Navailles and Susmiou.
