Whereas the plane is in automatic piloting, there remains the 7 hours equivalent of flight out of kerosene before he is crushed. Tender Branson tells its life in the flight recorder with the hope which the block box will keep a trace of its account which explains its motivations.
Explanation of the end
The end of the book remains very enigmatic. Since what one bed corresponds only to the contents of the block box of the plane, one does not know absolutely what it really arrives at Tender. However Happiness said to him to the chapter 3 qu ' it would find average to survive.
It is noticed that the first and the final chapter are punctuated by the sentence
“Checking. Checking. One, two, three”
and that Tender does not seem certain only what he says is really recorded - what seems absurd if he addresses himself to a block box. In addition he repeats many times
“what you listen to, it is the flight recorder of the flight 2039”
It is in fact false concerning chapter 47 and chapter 1. When Tender takes the control of the plane it mentions that the passengers piled up close to the cockpit their goods of values, among which appear
“wallets, watches, laptops, mobile phones, tape recorders with minicassette, portable CD readers, alliances. ”
Actually chapters 1 and 47 were recorded on a cassette recorder that Tender activated at the beginning and the end of its account, which is preserved to him directly on the block box. Tender initially recorded the end of its life on recorder, before telling what had brought it until there on the recorder of vol. That explains why it is not certain that the recorder works, and makes it possible to understand that it actually survived while jumping of the plane the last moment. The tape recorder continuing to speak and be recorded on the block box as if Tender had really remained on the aircraft until the end.
