Surprised of Meaux

the surprise of Meaux is a conspiracy organized in 1567 by Louis Ier de Bourbon-Cop to remove the king of France, Charles IX, and the royal family. This event starts the Second war of religion (1567 - 1568).

Feeling to assemble the dangers, Condé decided to assemble a preventive action in spite of the reserves of Coligny. Taking pretext that the king de France was threatened by the Italians who planned to capture it, it made invest, the September 28th 1567 the castle of Montceaux in Brie, close to Meaux to seize the person the king. This one and its mother managed to escape the Protestants only from extreme accuracy and could flee in Meaux then to gain Paris.

This extravagant operation that the history retained under the name of “surprised of Meaux” was the pretext with the release of new violences. The following day, day of the Saint-Michel, the catholic priests were massacred and of the atrocities were made at the time of the “michelade” of Nimes.

The second civil war which followed these events hardly lasted, the financial means antagonists not having neither nor perhaps the determination to engage the battle which was reduced to some operations without large envergure.
The Paix of Longjumeau which put an end to it returned to the status quo handle .

It was however only one simple truce made profitable to reconstitute the military forces. The true war took again in 1569. The huguenots had settled with La Rochelle during the truce and had reconstituted their troops. The following combat were held in the provinces of the west and south-west.
