Hydrology
The annual medium flow of Surmelin, calculated over 47 years with Saint-Eugene (of 1961 to 2007), is of 2,71 m ³ a second for a surface of basin of 454 km ².
The river present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow, with winter high waters carrying the average monthly flow on a level ranging between 3,4 and 4,9 m ³, from December to April included (with an in February maximum), and the thin ones of summer, June to October, characterized by a fall of the monthly medium flow up to 1,31 m ³ in August.
With the low water levels, the VCN3 can fall until 0,57 m ³, in the event of dry quinquennial period. Let us recall that the VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.
The risings are rather frequent but definitely less important than those of the Grand Morin. The recorded maximum instantaneous flow was of 47,7 m ³ a second on December 6th, 1988, while the value maximum day laborer was of 46,0 m ³ a second on March 31st, 1962. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively are worth repectivement 30 and 44 m ³ a second. The QIX 10, or calculated flow of decennial rising, is of 54 m ³, and the QIX 20 of 33 m ³ a second. As for the QIX 50, it is of 75 m ³ (see note).
As comparison, let us recall that the QIX 10 of its neighbor, the Petit Morin with Jouarre is worth 29 m ³ a second for a basin of 605 km ², while its QIX 50 is of 39 m ³. One notices thus that the QIX 10 as the QIX 50 of Surmelin is about the double of those of Small Morin, whereas the catchment area of this last is wider of a third. In other words the risks of overflow of Surmelin are definitely higher than those of Small Morin.
The Lame of water past in the basin is of 189 millimetres annually, which is lower than the overall average of France, like to the average of the totality of the catchment area of the Seine (220 mm). The specific Flow or Qsp is assembled at 6,0 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
