Surfing music

The term surfing music indicates a musical genre appeared in California at the end of the years 50 and takes its take-off as of 61. Closely dependant on the Surfing and its culture then flourishing in the surroundings of Los Angeles, it is characterized by short and fast songs with the melodies simple and enjouées, on rates/rhythms rock' roll.

Beginnings

At its beginnings, the surfing music was initially instrumental, and would have been invented by Dick “King off the Surf Guitar” Paves in 1957, with a its characteristic. Dick Dale had tested a guitar Gibson but the sound not being appropriate to him, it had chosen a Fender Stratocaster at the beginning of 1954. The surfing music is supposed to evoke the rush of Adrénaline of the surfer in the “tube” of a wave. The first title of surfing music recognized as such is of Dick Dale and His LED-Tons Let' S Go Trippin' , left in the USA in September 1961 at Deltone Records. The Shadows are sometimes seen like precursors of the kind.

The other known titles are:

  • Dick Paves Misirlou , May 1962
  • The Beautiful-Airs, Mr. Moto , 1961
  • The Chantays, Pipeline , 1962
  • The Surfaris, Wipe out / Surfer Joe , 1963
  • The Astronauts, Surf Party / Competition Cuts , October 1963 (see the original labels of the discs)

The melodies are very often sought, with choruses and a harmony on several levels. The sound of the guitar (with reverberation pushed with its maximum) is also very characteristic. The words evoke the easy life of the surfer with his topics of predilection (girls, sun, engines, motor bikes, holidays, and surfing).

Golden age then decline

The fashion extended quickly to all the country, for example the Trashmen , slang American meaning in French " éboueurs" , originating in Mineapolis however to more than thousand kilometers of the ocean, and which produced the hit Surfin' Bird in 1963 (4th in the USA). Charges of plagiarism will in addition be raised for The Bird' S The Word (1963, 12th in the USA) and Pa Pa ooh mow mow (April 1963) of The Rivingtons, but finally the interested parties will find an agreement.

The scene surfing was often used as springboard with many musicians and producers (of which Lou Adler and Gary Usher), which there made their first weapons and reconverted then worms of other musical genres.

The surfing music disappears from the tops of the hit-parades towards 1964 - 65 with the arrival of the British groups in the tread of the Beatles and with the changes of taste of the public. The music was then associated with a culture of young carefree white which tallied badly with the concerns of the country plunged in the Guerre of Vietnam.

In Third Stone from the Sun , Jimi Hendrix known as you' L never hear surfing music again . Interpretations of this sentence vary. Dick Dale was seriously sick at the time and Hendrix believed that he had died, which would have put a term at surfing music. The other version is relating to the cancellation in a concert of Beach Boys at the time of a festival, Hendrix would have liked to mean that nobody any more was going to be interested in this group after this episode.

Even if success is not any more with go, the kind keeps a certain popular character and reappears episodically, sometimes in unexpected places. It is necessary to announce a revival to London for the beginning of the Années 1980 with The Barracudas, then The Surfin' Lungs. Another return takes place in the United States in the Années 1980, with Jon and The Nightriders and in the Années 1990, with The Aqua-Velvets, Los Straitjackets and Rudy and The Surf Kings. The titles Miserlou of Dick Paves, Bustin' Surfboards of The Tornadoes (1962), The Bullwinkle II of The Centurions, Comanche of The Revels or Surf To wrinkle The Lively Ones appear in the original soundtrack of Pulp Fiction of Quentin Tarantino in 1994.

The surfing music had an influence on many groups, with the passing of years, even if their sound seems sometimes far away from the original model with, for example: The Clean, in the spirit of the short, fast and melody songs and in their recoveries (Superfine' bird, California sun), Pixies, Radio Birdman in Australia, The Go-Gos as well as many others.

There still nowadays exist groups playing of surfing music, but the current remains extremely confidential, and without significant contribution with the initial style.
