Surdo

The surdo is an musical instrument of bi- cylindrical Membranophone of form and whose was is made of wood or metal. It is the drum low with skin of the samba in Brazil.

The Peau is generally of animal origin but can also be synthetic (nylon), in this case, it is sometimes covered with a " nappe" in oil-cloth or skaï.

The current system of tension consists of ties whose end is blocked in the hooping of the bottom of the instrument, while the other end is threaded and maintained on the hooping top by nut S.

The origin of the surdo is a heritage of the large European cases of Fanfare S as regards the instrument, on the other hand the interpreted way of playing about it and rates/rhythms have a strong anchoring in the African tradition.

It is integrated into the batteries of percussions of samba and has as a main role to mark the first time while being bulkiest of the instruments of a bateria .

The surdo is played with Mailloche S (only one mailloche in the case of sambas of Rio de Janeiro, two in the case of the samba reggae of Salvador de Bahia). When one plays only one mailloche about it, the other hand is pressed on the skin to alanguir the sounds while cutting the Harmonique S. the end of these mailloches is thick and often marrowy in order to attenuate the striking of the instrumentalist.
