Suprema Corte de Justicia of Nación

The Supreme court of justice of the Nation (in Spanish Suprema Corte de Justicia of Nación ) is more the high authority of the judicial Power federal with the Mexico, except out of electoral matters which fall on the electoral Tribunal of the judicial power of the federation.

It is composed of 11 judges called ministros . One of these judges is president of the court, the current one is Mariano Azuela Güitrón.

Building

The Supreme court is located in the historical center of Mexico City.

The architect Antonio Muñoz García gains the invitation to tender for the construction of the building. The first stone is posed by the president Lázaro Cárdenas del Río in 1936 and it is its successor Manuel Ávila Camacho who inaugurates it the June 2nd 1941.

The building is characterized by its door in Bronze representing four big steps from the Histoire from Mexico: the evangelization at the time of the conquest, the federal republic according to the independence, the Reform and Mexico according to the Revolution.

Since 2002, an appendix was open in the delegation Alvaro Obregón.

Mode of nomination

For each vacancy, the senate is elected in the majority of two thirds by the senate starting from a list proposed by the President of the Republic. If the senate does not manage to elect a candidate with the necessary majority, the president must prepare a new list of candidates. In the event of renewed failure, the nomination of the judge falls to the president.

The mandate is 15 years without possible re-election.

The criteria of elegibility are

to be Mexicain of birth;
to be 35 years old completed the day of the election;
to have a license of Right since at least ten years;
to enjoy a good reputation and not to be condemned for Flight, Fraud, forgery, breach of trust or a Offense deserving a sorrow higher than year of Imprisonment;
not to have exerted a high position in the other capacities of the federation (of which appointed, senator, minister, public prosecutor) and not to have been governor of a State (or chief of the government of Mexico City) in the year preceding the nomination.

The resignation is not possible that for serious causes or departure with the retirement under the conditions fixed by the law. There does not exist procedure of Destitution.

The president of the court is elected among the 11 ministros for one 4 years duration. He cannot be re-elected for the following term. ,

Attributions

Attributions of the court are defined by article 10 and 11 of the Organic law of the judicial power of the federation of the November 22nd 1996.

It rules on (noncomplete list):

the recourse in Constitution nality;
sentences delivered by judges of lower bodies in a certain number of definite cases.
