Superstars

Proclamation of the generation Techno of the end of the Years 1990 and devoted as being the “first French pop novel ever written”, Superstars is the second novel of the novelist Ann Scott published in the editions Flammarion in 2000.

Summary

This novel which is held in Paris, on bottom of nightclubs, unslung sex and drugs of all kinds, depicts the desilvered but optimistic daily newspaper of three friends artists and joint tenants on standby of artistic recognition. Whereas it will be thirty years old, Louise, the main character, finds herself abruptly vis-a-vis a dilemma. A few years ago, she gave up her life of bass player of rock'n'roll to become deejay of techno. While integrating the world of the electronic music, it also passed from the heterosexuality to the bisexuality, to end up becoming homosexual exclusivelment. One morning, without including/understanding why, it awakes taken nostalgia for its past, its musical tastes of then and its male adventures which went with. She then wonders so for some time she would not make false route in the direction that its life took.

Comment

First novel devoted to the culture techno, Superstars gave place to various theses of students. A whole generation was found in the wandering of Louise which hesitates between rock'n'roll and techno, and heterosexuality and homosexuality.

This novel pays homage to musician DJ Sextoy deceased later two years in February 2002. One also finds there deejays universally recognized such as Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, The Hacker, Manu Malignant the, Atari Teenage Riot, Herbert, DJ Hell, Laurent Garnier and late Liza' Eliaz. A homage is also paid to the Rolling Stones, and in particular with their guitarist Keith Richards like with musicians of the period American Punk of the end of the year 1970 such as Johnny Thunders or The Ramones.

Ann Scott was highly criticized by associations gay and lesbians to have declared on the plate of the emission Nowhere elsewhere that for it: “as much the bisexuality is something of naturalness, as much homosexuality is something of probably pathological”.

A film adaptation is in hand.
