The Superior council of the French language is, in several French-speaking countries , an organism in charge of advising the Government on the related questions for the use of the French language. Such an organization exists in France, Belgium and with the Quebec (for the application of the Charte of the French language). In French-speaking Switzerland, the Delegation with the French language has a similar mission. These various organizations of linguistic management cooperate regularly between them.
The Superior council of the French language of Belgium was successively chaired by Joseph Hanse, Jean-Marie Klinkenberg and Marc Wilmet.
To the sides of the Council, the Service of the French language leads a policy of research and animation.
Its first task consisted in proposing a series of orthographical Rectifications of the French language. These corrections, published in a report/ratio and approved by the French Academy like by authorities of other French-speaking countries, were published in the Official journal in 1990 and are officially recommended in France, without being obligatory (these corrections are more regularly used in Belgium and Switzerland).
The Council is chaired by the Prime Minister and includes/understands 22 personalities, of which perpetual Secretaries of the French Academy and the Academy of Science. Its vice-president was Yves Berger (deceased in 2004). He is attached to the ministry for the culture and the General delegation with the French language and the languages of France ensures its secretariat.
A permanent personnel allows the realization of these objectives, and supervises the evolution of the linguistic situation in Quebec as for the use of the language and to his quality. The Council of the French language thus undertakes studies on the integration, teaching working language of the immigrants, data processing and new technologies, the Public administration, the services, posting, the scientific information and technique, etc
To recognize the efforts of the people and the organizations which were illustrated by their activities of promotion of French, the Council decrees also prices: the Order of the French-speaking people of America, the price of 3-July-1608 and the price Jules-Baker. The Québécois Council also set up the Prix Emile-Ollivier, in 2004, within the framework of the Forum of the francophonie.
