The superintendent of finances is an officer of the administration of finances in the France of Ancien Mode, charged to order the expenditure of the State.

History

The term appears in 1561. The load was the heiress of that of intendant of finances, created in 1552 by Henri II. At the time, three intendant S had been named. One of them also took part in the private Council. The title of superintendent rose from this preeminence. In 1561, the title échut with two members, Artus of Thimble-Brissac and the count de Chaulnes. A payment of the October 23rd 1563 laid out that the Council of the king would meet once per week to treat questions of finances. Were to meet there inter alia the superintendents of finances and other officers of the department of finances, like the treasurer of the Saving. In 1567, Cossé was promoted Marshal of France. He resigned his load, thus probably that the count de Chaulnes, in favor of Rene de Birague. This one thus exerted only, and after 1570, its load was assumed by the royal Council of finances.

Henri III, removed to him the Council of finances in 1574 and named a superintendent. Henri IV again replaced superintendence by a council. On the whole, the load functioned in an intermittent way, its destiny intrinsically dependant on that of the Council of finances.

The September 5th 1661, Fouquet was stopped for embezzlements, and was submitted in front of a room of justice. The 12, a payment replaced the load of superintendent by the royal Council of finances, where was to sit a Intendant of finances, in the species Colbert which will become then General inspector of finances.
