Supercoupe of the UEFA

The Supercoupe of the UEFA or Supercoupe d' Europe is a European competition of Football opposing the winner of the Ligue of the Champions to the winner of the UEFA Cup.

History

In 1973, the Glasgow Rangers festival its hundredth birthday. Having gained the Cut of Europe of the winners of cuts the former season, they decide to organize a match of official reception against the winner of the Coupe of Europe of the Clubs Champions, the Ajax Amsterdam. For the interest of the match, the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf offered a trophy named “Super Cut of Europe”. UEFA desired step to deal with the organization of this competition because this year, Rangers was suspended because of the behavior of its supporters. It took again however its organization as of the following year.

Format

Until 1999, the Supercoupe d' Europe opposed the winner of the Ligue of the Champions to that of the Coupe of Europe of the winners of cuts. With the disappearance of the latter, it was the winner of the UEFA Cup which took the place.

The Supercoupe d' Europe is currently played in only one match, generally disputed in the month of August. Of 1972 with 1997, it was played in matches safe return ticket in 1984, 1986 and 1991. It was not disputed in 1974, 1981 and 1985.

Since 1998, it is played each year at the end of August with the Stade Louis II of Monaco in a single match

Trophies

A challenge offered by UEFA is given for one year to the victorious club, which must return it two months before the following final. It receives also a counterpart of the trophy of size reduced on a purely final basis. The names of the winners are engraved on the trophy. The holder of the trophy can make some carry out a copy provided that it is provided with the quite visible inscription “retorts” and that its dimensions do not exceed the 4/5 of the original.

The trophy becomes final property of the club which gains it three times of continuation or five times in all.

Only has it for the moment gained definitively with 5 victories: 1989,1990,1994,2003 and 2007.

Dutch Arie Haan gained it with 4 recoveries, in 1972, 1973, 1976 and 1978.

A new trophy was given for the first time in August 2006 to the team of.
