Supercopter

Supercopter ( Airwolf ) is a American Televised series in 80 50 minutes episodes created by Donald P. Bellisario and diffused between the January 22nd 1984 and the July 7th 1987 on the network CBS. In France, the series was diffused starting from the April 21st 1986 on the Five.

Synopsis

The main character of the series is Stringfellow Hawke (played by Jan-Michael Vincent), a recluse who lives in a hut in the middle of the mountains, with for only company his Ted dog. He has a collection of priceless tables as well as a violoncello Stradivarius. His/her only friend is Dominic Santini (played by Ernest Borgnine). Santini has a company of helicopters, Santini Air , specialized in the Hollywood film cascades.

Hawke was a test pilot of Supercopter , a prototype single of Hélicoptère Militaire, able to reach speeds Supersonique S. Construit by the Firm (or the Agency ), company close to the CIA, he is stolen by his creator, Dr. Charles Henry Moffet, who wants to sell it with the Libya. Hawke is then called by a man called Archangel, which directs the firm to find Supercopter.

Hawke, helped of Santini recovers the apparatus, but refuses to return it. They hide the helicopter in an extinct volcano of the Valley Monument. They achieve specific missions for the CIA, exchanges the CIA of it must help it to find his/her brother missing during the Guerre from Vietnam.

In the second season, Caitlin O' Shannessy (played by Jean Bruce Scott) made its appearance. She works for Santini Air and is used as pilot of replacement for Supercopter.

After several year (at the beginning of season 4), it ends up finding his brother Saint John, who takes his place with the orders of Supercopter since Springfellow dies with Dominic in an attack.

It should be noted that Hawke, in original version fore-mentioned “Stringfellow”, changes into French with the liking of the episodes in “Springfellow”.

Supercopter

The helicopter used in the series is in fact a Bell 222 , built by the company Bell Helicopter. It is painted in black on the top and white in lower part. The helicopter is armoured and can carry out impossible operations for a normal helicopter; it can even go at supersonic speeds (the maximum speed of a helicopter is close to 0,5 Mach). These exceptional capacities are due to the two turbomotors placed on the side of the helicopter.

Comments

  • the series could be inspired by the success of the film Tonnerre of fire ( Blue Thunder ). This one had also a clean, but less popular derived series.
  • Insofar as the producers did not receive an authorization to fly over cities, the series had a dépaysant look of “countryside and end of the world”.
  • the helicopter used in the series, a Bell 222 (serial number 47085) was resold like ambulance with a German company, Hubschrauber-To probe-Dienst it, at the end of the third season, after the modifications were removed and that it was repaints. It was crushed the June 9th 1991 at the time of a storm. Its 3 passengers were killed
  • During the turning of the series, a helicopter was crushed and the lining of Hawke was killed. A homage is paid to him at the end of the episode ( Natural Born ).
  • the creator Donald P. Bellisario and Deborah Pratt (the assistant of Archangel) met on the series and married. When Bellisario left the series at the beginning of the third season dissatisfied with the turning which the series took, it took along Deborah with him. With its place, Archangel has a multitude of assistants equipped in white.
