Supercentenaire

A supercentenaire is a person who reached or exceeded the 110 years age, age that only one centenary out of thousand reached or exceeds (given European). Beyond this age, only a supercentenaire on 44 reached the 115 years (only 22 supercentenaires celebrated their 115 years, of which the half did not exceed the 115 years, the quarter the 116, the eighth the 117).

The supercentenaire term has appeared in the Seventies, it thus was quoted by the journalist Norris McWhirter, the editor of the Livre Guinness of the records, and has for summer taken again like a term running to nominate the persons having largely exceeded the 100 years, 110 years being the threshold commonly admitted, before being begun again by the medium of research in Gériatrie. But this threshold could be lowered by the researchers at 107 years since it was shown recently that this age corresponds to a statistical threshold with a stabilization of death rate. Indeed, it is noted that:

  • between 95 years and 107 years, the growth of death rate drops;
  • as from 107 years, death rate becomes constant.

One estimates from now on whom if this extreme longevity is due to genetic factors, the environment plays also a great role. The multiplication of the medicalized microbe or climatic variation, old people's homes putting the very old people at the shelter of the stress could make increase the number of supercentenaires considerably.

The National institute of health and the medical research (Inserm), the Institute max Planck and about fifteen research centres of developed countries take part in a research program and of collection of data on the supercentenaires, with the creation of an international database on named human longevity IDL ( International database one longevity ).

Centenaries

A centenary ago proven in the world before the 18th century, they remain exceptional until the beginning of the 20th century but their progression becomes exponential, in the countries developed, since 1945. The number of centenaries doubles every 10 years in France and every 5 years in Japan.

Several cases of groups of centenaries or supercentenaires were announced in precise areas of the world (the Caucasus, Andean valleys or American Georgia). But these cases did not resist the scientific studies and statistics, the announced ages appearing inaccurate.

In 2006, in France, 20.000 centenaries ago against 200 in 1950 (30% are considered to be healthy of spirit) of which a dozen supercentenaires of more than 110 years. INSEE envisages 150.000 centenaries in 2050, INSERM nearly 300.000.

As these tables show it, the men also can reach very advanced ages. But it are rare to celebrate their 110 springs. Passed this bar, the population of supercentenaires is almost exclusively female. Only 8 French men exceeded the 110 years, 2 then exceeded the 111 years.

French Supercentenaires on which exists a doubt

  • Tériihaérétéi Taaora , farmer born in French Polynesia on June 14th, 1873 on the island of Raïatéa. Deceased on January 3rd, 1991, would have reached the 117 years and 204 days age. This case was not surely validated for lack of documentations. If this case proved to be exact Mr Taaora would have been senior of the humanity from January 11th, 1988 to January 3rd, 1991.

  • Annibal Camoux , man illustrates born in 1638 in Nice (the Alpes-Maritimes). Former soldier on the galères of the king, Camoux becomes centenary without losing his strength, and it allots its longevity to its practice to chew root of angelica. Louis XV allocates a pension to him. The cardinal of Belloy, appointed bishop of Marseilles in 1755, likes to visit him. Several painters make his portrait, and among them Vernet, which represents it on a sight of the wearing of Marseilles. Annibal Camoux dies out in 1759 in Marseilles, at 121 years the remarkable age.

  • Jean Talker , butcher of profession, would have been born on March 3rd 1645 with Lanfeust in Ploumoguer, Brittany and deceased on April 30th 1774 with Saint Mathieu with the 129 years age. He believed himself, indeed, forgotten of God. One has it 130 years old known as. It remained with thirty steps of the entry of the abbey. Its portrait is carried out this same year by Caffieri, sculptor of Roy, and is thus captioned “… time was tired on this Low Breton old man, His scythe which destroys all, was notched on its face ”. (Caffieri is also the author of the tomb of Dom Michel Nobletz that one can admire in the church of Conquet). According to its certificate of marriage in 1690 with Marie Lehir de Ploumoguer, it would have been 25 years old, according to the certificate of another marriage with Louise Halscouet in 1692 her age would have been of approximately 30 years, therefore its birth date could range between 1662 and 1670, which wants to say that it could have had between 104 and 112 years at the date of its death. What would be exceptional at that time.
