Super deformed
Super Deformed is a graphic style especially used in the video games and the Manga S.
Generally employed in his shortened form, SD , one finds it transcribed sometimes in the form of the Anglicism Super Deformed . The term refers in fact with Japanese “deforume” (デフォルメ), which is a term pertaining to the lexicon of art, and finds its origin in French “to deform”.
It indicates a style of particular drawing, in which a character is drawn with an enormous head, being able to do more twice that of the trunk (against approximately a third in canonical proportions such as those which presents the drawing of the Homme of Vitruve).
Anecdote
For a few years, description SD has tended to disappear in Japan. It is sometimes replaced by the “small” term in French, that Japanese pronounces “puchi” (プチ). One will be able to also note that, if term “SD” seems to raise in Japan rather of an effect of mode related in an intrinsic way to the subculture Otaku, it can in general be replaced by the term “nitoushin” (にとうしん、 二頭身), which is included/understood by a side of the population definitely broader.
