SuperLiga

The SuperLiga is a competition of football of North America. Created in 2007, it is organized jointly by the Major League Soccer and the Championnat of Mexico of football. For its 1st edition, SuperLiga saw to clash four teams of the the United States and four teams of the Mexico. Theoretically, the Canada could also be represented in this tournament by the Toronto FC which evolves/moves in MLS (if this one were qualified). The winner gained the sum of a million dollars.

Format

The format of this tournament resembles that of the Football world cup FIFA but SuperLiga corresponds rather to the local version of the Ligue of the Champions. The eight teams are divided into two groups. The teams of each hen clash between them (first leg only). The classification of hens is then establishes. The two first of each group are qualified for the semi-finals which are played in only one match and by direct elimination. The victorious teams then reach the final which is also played in only one match. The winner of this final will be declared Champion of North America.

The participating teams initially were selected on invitation. For the next edition, in 2008, the four best clubs of the Major League Soccer will be present (according to their classification at the conclusion of the regular season). The mode of qualification of the Mexican teams is not yet known.
