Suomussalmi

Suomussalmi is a municipality the North-East of the Finland, in the area of the Kainuu.

Geography

The commune is very wide, it is largest besides of Kainuu and the ninth of the country. It marks öa transition between Kainuu and the Koillismaa to which it is often attached.

Agriculture is completely marginal and the forest dominates the landscape. Both larger lakes, the Vuokkijärvi and the Kiantajärvi, are very lengthened and bordered by broken banks. The lakes occupy only 10% of surface, in the average of the country.

One does not find there a national park but several fields of excursion like that of Hossa. In addition to long a border with the Russia, it is bordered by the following municipalities:

History

Suomussalmi evokes for all the Finns the principal battle of the Guerre of Winter, the defensive victory against the the USSR and the heroism of the Finnish troops gaining a crushing success with 1 against 4. It is there in bragged of December 1939 and January 1940 that the country gained the right to preserve its independence. The historians distinguish two battles, the Bataille of Suomussalmi and that of the road of Raate. In a little more than one month, 3 Régiment S Finnish practically destroyed two division S Soviet.

The village of Suomussalmi was completely destroyed by the Finnish troops right before its capture by the Soviets to prevent that they can find any there refuge. It was rebuilt with ten kilometers of the initial site.

The commune is constellated today with patriotic monuments, most known being Liekki (the torch) of Alvar Aalto, which one finds on the blazon of the municipality.
