Sun Records

Sun records is a musical label founded by Sam Phillips to the 706 Union Which occurred with Memphis in the Tennessee with the the United States in 1950. It is specialized at the beginning in the recording amateur for the private individuals (marriages, ceremonies,…), then turns to the musicians.

It will be at the origin of a great number of tubes and artists recognized in a kind that it contributes to create: the Rock' roll.

Although Ike Turner and the Kings off Rhythm recorded there Rocket 88 in 1951, considered as the first piece Rock' roll of the history of the music, they will be the studios Chess Records of Chicago, to which the license was yielded, which will profit from the repercussions, in particular economic.

The first official production of the Sun studios is in March 1952: " Drivin' Slow" by Johnny London.

The July 5th 1954 is a memorable date for the label, since Elvis Presley, then unknown, records there That' S All Right Mama, a resumption of Arthur Crudup, which will become its first tube.

Then other artists, now famous, it must have given them their first chance, such Carl Perkins with " Blue Sued Shoes ", Jerry Lee Lewis with " Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' One " and " Great Balls off Fire " , Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash,…

The December 4th 1956 is a memorable date: whereas Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins is in studio to record, Elvis Presley unloads. They begin an improvisation that Sam Phillips will not fail to put on tapes; but the disc will leave only many years later under the name of The Million Dollar Four-bit byte .

After the repurchase of the contract of Elvis Presley by RCA Records (Radio Corporation off America, now property of Sony BMG Music Entertainment) in 1956, then the departure of Johnny Cash for label CBS Records (Columbia Broadcasting System, also now property of Sony BMG Music Entertainment) in 1958, mark end of the gilded period of the Sun.
