- August 5th 2003: First public demonstration of the Project Looking Knell
- 2004: Java 5 (Java 2.1.5).
- 2005 : Solaris 10 and StarOffice 8. Launching of the project OpenSolaris.
- June 2nd 2005: Acquisition of the manufacturer of StorageTek storage.
- 2006 : Java 6. - Sun adopts the model Open Source and delivers Java 6 pennies the Public license general GNU (LPG)

Its support for the Free software
Sun helped of many times the world of the Free software.
