Sun Microsystems () is a manufacturer of Ordinateur S and a editor of Logiciel S American.

  • the turnover of the company is of 11,1 billion dollars (2005) and the manpower of approximately 38.600 people (2006). Sun is present in more than 100 countries (2005).

  • the name Sun comes from Stanford University Network (Network of the Université Stanford).
  • Sun produces waiters and work stations based on the processor SPARC and X86, the operating systems Solaris (in the past SunOS), a virtual Machine Java, the Langage of Programmation Java.
  • Sun is the inventor Standard NFS ( Network File System ), it is also at the origin of the standardization of UNIX System V Release 4 (in partnership with AT&T).
  • the original idea of the UNIX work stations was thought when its founders were students with the university Stanford (Palo Alto, California).

History

  • 1982 : creation of the company by Andy Bechtolsheim, Bill Joy, Vinod Khosla and Scott McNealy. The company counts 4 employees. First work station including TCP/IP.
  • 1984 : creation of technology NFS, become a standard for the file-sharing in network.
  • 1986 : introduction in purse. Deposit of sun.com domain name.
  • 1987 : standardization of UNIX System V Release 4 (with AT&T).
  • 1988 : turnover of a billion dollar.
  • 1989 : opening of a research center and development in France.
  • 1991 : 500  000 systems delivered since the creation of Sun.
  • 1992 : Sun enters index S&P500.
  • 1993 : 1  000  000 of delivered systems.
  • 1995 : Technology Java. Certification quality ISO 9001. Certified factories ISO 9002.
  • 1998 : Solaris 7. Java 2.
  • 1999: Software StarOffice.
  • 2000 : Solaris 8.
  • 2002: Solaris 9.
  • 2003: StarOffice 7.
  • August 5th 2003: First public demonstration of the Project Looking Knell
  • 2004: Java 5 (Java 2.1.5).
  • 2005 : Solaris 10 and StarOffice 8. Launching of the project OpenSolaris.
  • June 2nd 2005: Acquisition of the manufacturer of StorageTek storage.
  • 2006 : Java 6. - Sun adopts the model Open Source and delivers Java 6 pennies the Public license general GNU (LPG)
  • April 25th 2006: Nomination of Jonathan Schwartz at the station of CEO

Its support for the Free software

Sun helped of many times the world of the Free software. It will thus release the source codes of StarOffice for the formation of the project OpenOffice.org, the most famous free office automation continuation.
