Summit of the Devil
The summit of the Devil is a top located in the chain of the the Alps, in the Massif of Mercantour, in the the Alpes-Maritimes (France), in the Vallée of Roya. This top is inside the National park of Mercantour. Toponymy in the neighborhoods of the top has also a diabolic mark: lakes of the Hell, not of Trem ( tremor ), Valmasque ( valley of the witch ). The origin is dubious: deformation of roots of the words rocks or mounts, strong stormy activity on this top, or influence considered to be malignant by the Clergy of the presence of engravings of the Valley of the Wonders.
The summit of the Devil is made up of sandstone. It finishes the assembly line starting from the Mont Rabbit burrow which separates the Vallée from Gordolasque of the Vallée of the Wonders. The top has a peak in the South, the higher Capelet mount (2 637 meters). Of its position isolated in Southern limit from the park, the summit of the Devil constitutes with the Mont Bégo or the Capelet mount a higher (with which it merges sometimes) easily observable top since the coast. In spite of its altitude, it is separate only of 30 kilometers as the crow flies seaside.
The normal way of access uses the falls of the North-eastern slope at the beginning of the step of Trem. The path is a little air but does not present a particular difficulty. The rise at the top constitutes a traditional Randonnée department.
