Summertime is a made up song in 1935 by George Gershwin for her opera in three acts Porgy and Bess .
History
Gershwin started to compose this piece in December 1933 in the style Negro-spiritual . It alternates two verses of sixteen measurements and is generally played in minor D (it is sometimes played in So minor). The words are of DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. It is a Berceuse which the character of Clara in the first act of the opera sings to deaden his child, taken again in counterpoint of the scene of craps, then, in act II, always by Clara, and finally, in act III, by the character of Bess. The action is in the Thirties, in South Carolina. In this America in full depression, the Blacks are the first victims of misery. However, in the court of the district Catfish Row, one drinks, one sings, one plays, one dances, even.This piece became a Standard of jazz and was also taken again by many interpreters Pop. A regrouping of collectors of recordings of Summertime affirms to have listed has November 21st, 2007 9,223 versions and at least 21,013 public executions.
