Summary of the Roman History

The Abrégé Roman History is the work of Eutrope, it consists of ten books, which go from the Fondation of Rome at the end of the reign of the emperor Jovien (364). It is a clear account and of an easy style, composed for the instruction of the emperor Valens, it seems.

Its principal merit is to learn, in some lines, which occurred during several centuries. Here what Eutrope in its foreword writes:

“According to the will of Your Leniency, I briefly gathered in a short account, and in the chronological order, the capital events of the Roman history, arrived in the war or peace, since the foundation of the City until our time; I added there the brilliant deeds which marked the life of our princes, so that the divine genius of Your Serenity could be delighted to have followed, in the administration of the empire, the example of the famous men, before knowing it by the reading. ”
