Sum 41

Sum 41 is a Canadian group of Punk rock'n'roll formed at the end of the years 1990. It is composed of the singer and guitarist Deryck Whibley, alias Bizzy D, of the bass player Jason McCaslin alias Cone and of the beater Steve Jocz, alias Stevo 32. The guitarist Dave Baksh, alias Brownsound, left the group in May 2006. The new guitarist who replaces Dave Baksh, and which follows the group for the lives ones, a little with the manner of Green Day, names Tom Thacker.

Biography

The group saw the day in 1996 with Ajax in Ontario the 41e day of the summer, it is from there that their name " comes; Sum 41" , Sum being in English the diminutive of the word summer meaning " été". Composed initially of Esteban (guitar and song) and Steve Jocz (battery), the formation is supplemented by the recruitment of Hugo (guitar) and of Jason McCaslin (low). The members of the group are then old on average 16 years and affublent themselves of pseudo: Bizzy.D (Deryck), Stevo 32 (Steve), Dave Brownsound (Dave) and Cone (Jason).

Sum 41 very quickly attracts the public and the recording companies, fond of delicacies at the time of this youth. After several spectacles and first parts of concert whose Blink 182, they sign in 1999 with the Canadian label Aquarius for Canada, and Island Records for the the United States. It will be Universal which will be in charge of the distribution.

They are not long in leaving their first album Half Hour Of Power in June 2000. A sound Punk rather aggressive “garage” which proposes the potential of Stevo 32. However, the album is sold little, but the occasion will give them to carry out a round with the the United States. Indeed, Sum 41 ensured the 1 Re part of very known groups: Blink-182 and The Offspring, inter alia.

After several months on the road and a notoriety which does nothing but increase, they turn over in studio with the producer Jerry Finnbad in order to record All Killer, No Filler left in May 2001. a DVD entitled Introduction to Destruction appeared in April 2002 will follow of them. Tuesday, April 25, 2006, the Canadian Alliance of the creators of music whose group is member, denounces the attitude of the majors who should speak on their behalf, and not with the names of the artists who do not share the same sights on the Internet and the Piratage. They gather around three key concepts:

3. The cultural policy should help the indeed Canadian artists: " The large majority of the new Canadian music is not promoted by the principal publishers which give their attention in priority to the foreign artists. The government should have recourse to other government schemes to ensure its support the current Canadian artists and to support the blooming of the music scene and culturelle".

Clap of thunder in May 2006, Dave Baksh leaves the group (in a friendly way), and assembles its own " group; Brown Brigade". He explains why he could not express all his creativity within the group. So for much of fans, it is a real disappointment, for the others it is a true oxygen puff, because all knew the enormous potential which Dave released on scene. There is extremely to bet that many fans will follow it on his new project undoubtedly more directed towards metal. The group will turn officially now to 3 members, plus a guitarist for the lives ones & show TV, a little with the manner of Green Day currently.

On Saturday, July 15, 2006, one of the marriages more " people" for certain people place will have: that of Deryck Whibley with Avril Lavigne. It was held in Montecito, at two hours of Los Angeles. Their relation goes back to 2004 and they became engaged last June.

Collaboration/Duet

Sum 41 already on several occasions divided the scene with great names of the rock'n'roll, heavy metal and hard rock.

They occurred on the album of Iggy Pop " Skull Boxing ring " for a duet on Little Know it All ; passable title compared with the remainder of the album.

Steve Jocz & Greig Nori " took part in the song " C They Know It' S Hallowe' in " , Stevo as a singer in duet with the " group; Peaches " and Greig Nori as a sound engineer. Writing by " Nick Diamonds (Islands, ex-Unicorns) " & " Adam Gollner (Musician and also journalist with the " New York Times").

By-products by Steven McDonald, Adam Gollner & Nick Diamonds on the independent label Vice Records. Also took part in this disc the singer " Beck ", the " groups; Peaches ", " The Arcade Fire " , " Sonic Youth " and much of others still.
