Sultanine
The sultanine is a Cépage of table. It is very cultivated in the world for the production of fresh grapes and the preparation of dry grapes. The name evokes the vine of the Sultan.
The grapes are pleasant to consume in a fresh state since they do not have pips. The true destination is the drying of bays. They are easy to store in a dry and easily transportable state.
Origin and geographical distribution
The sultanine could be of origin Afghanistan. In Pachto, the word kismish (see synonymous) means grape to dry .
The first world producer is the Turkey with an acreage estimated at 120.000 hectares.
In the United States, the type of vine is marketed under the name of Thompson Seedless . William Thompson was the first commercially to cultivate the sultanine close to Yuba City. In 2000, 97% of the surface intended for type of vines of table were reserved for the Thompson Seedless. The result is often called grape or Golden delicious grape.
Other large producers are the Iran (50.000 hectares), the Greece (25.000 hectares), Afghanistan (20.000 hectares), the Chile, the Australia, the Syria, the China, the Iraq and the South Africa.
Pierre Galet considers the surface world planted at 438.000 hectares what places the sultanine like first type of vine cultivated in the world.
