Suibne Menn

Suibne Menn mac Fiachnai laughed Ard Érenn of 615 with 628

Suibne Menn whose nickname means “Stammerer” was the son of Fiachna mac Feradach he resulted thus from Cenél Feradaig, a clan of Cenél nÉogain of the Uí Neill of North.

We do not have any information on the capacity exerted by his/her father but it appears that his/her older brother Ernáine mac Fiachnai died in 636 was king d' Ailech.

It seems that Suibne had made profitable the defeat and death in 612 of his/her cousin Áed Uaridnach mac Domnaill to become the chief of Cenél nÉogain.

It obtains the title of laughed Ard Érenn in 615, by avenging this last with the battle for Sliab Truin where Máel Coba mac Áedo was killed, the representative of Cenél Conaill the other dynasty of the Uí Neill of North.

In 628 it demolishes the new chief of Cenél Conaill Domnall mac Áedo the brother of its predecessor but it itself is overcome and killed the same year with the battle of Tráig Bréine by Congall Clóen of Dál nAraidi the powerful king of Ulaid. This demolishes allowed Domnall mac Áedo to obtain the title of laughed Ard Érenn.

Suibne had married Rónait girl of Dúngalach Uí Thuirtri but it is clearly indicated only she and the mother of her two known sons:

  • Crunnmáel (towards 636)
  • Cenn Fáelad

Its family lost any importance at the end of VIIe century after the death of her small sons Flann mac Cenn Fáelad and Ánrothán mac Crunnmáel and that of her nephew Máel Fuataig mac Ernáine (death 662).
