Sugar Minott

Lincoln Barrington “Sugar” Minott is a singer, producer and musician of Reggae jamaïcain born the May 25th 1956 with Kingston. It is one of the founders of the group African Brothers.

Biography

Sugar Minott off began in the Sound system Sound Keytone Silence where it came to make its first weapons after the school. Then, one finds it into 1969 within the group African Brothers with Tony Tuff and Derrik Howard with which it left the titles like Party Time . In 1974, after No Cup No Broke , the group separates. Then it connects with a great number of resumptions of American standards for Studio One and Clement “Coxsone” Dodd.

At the time, the reggae is not well accepted on the island and the radios pass practically only from the American Soul. Studio One goes back at the time of the departures of Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe and John Holt. Sugar Minott contributed largely to the revival of the label with titles like Vanity (its first hit, in 1978), Oh Mr. cd. or Hang one Natty . Its career solo with original pieces, really starts with the title Hard Time Pressure into 1979 which is a strong success in England. It settles at the time in the United Kingdom where it contributes to develop the reggae.

Of return in Jamaica it creates its own label Black Roots and a structure of promotion: Youth Promotion. It signs artists like Barry Brown, Tristan Palmer, Tony Tuff or more recently Yanmi Bolo, Junior Reid, Steelie & Clevie or Fire Fox. But its greater success with Black Roots was to have produced the first piece of Garnett Silk.

Always also prolific, Sugar Minott does not cease recording, working with great names of the reggae: Fatiss Burrel, Bobby DIGITAL, King Jammy, Signal Ranking, Typed Zukie, King Tubby, or Bullwackies.
