Subway of Teheran

The Métro of Teheran is one of the joint transport system of the town of Teheran, capital of the Iran. The network comprises 3 lines; it is managed by the Compagnie of the rail-bound transports of the town of Teheran .

History

In 1971 of the studies were carried out to plan the urban development of Teheran for the 20 next years. The report, published in 1974, recommended, inter alia, the realization of a subway comprising 7 lines, supplemented by a network of lines of bus and taxis. A decree melting " the Company of the trains and subways of Téhéran" had passed in 1975. Geological surveys and studies of layouts were carried out the following years. This phase was strongly carried out by the event which followed one another in the following years: fall of the Iranian mode, Iran-Iraq war followed by problems of financing. In 1995 the first work started on lines 1,2 and 5. Line 5 entered finally in service in 1999. Sections of line 2 were brought into service in 2000 and part of line 1 in 2001.

Line 1

This line runs according to a North-South axis of the station Mirdamad to north to the station Haram-e-Motahar to the south. It currently includes/understands 22 stations and must be prolonged towards the south. After this bearing prolongation on 5 stations, the line should have a 28 km length. The only station in correspondence with the other lines is the station Iman Khomeini which is also a station of line 2. The oars, long, 137 meters comprise 7 cars and are supplied by Conductor rail in 750 Volts. Maximum speed is of 80 km/h.

Line 2

Line 2 currently comprises 11 stations, and 15 will have some in the long term. The line leaves the station of Baharestan then moves towards the west to the station Teheran (Sadeghieh) , close to Khomeini Imam where it offers a possibility of correspondence with line 5. Its overall length is of 10,9 km and should reach 19 km after prolongation. The oars which circulate on the line are of the same type as on line 1.

Line 5 (Tehran-Karaj-Mehrshahr-Schnellbahn)

Line 5 is in fact a traditional line of train (maximum speed 140 km/h) integrated in the joint transport system of the city. That clearly appears in the fact that the oars consist of 8 cars travellers on 2 floors tractor drawn by an electric engine (overall length 248 meters). The network can accommodate oars of 10 cars travellers. The engine is supplied with alternative course 25 Kv 50Hz. This line is also the only one with being air-conditioned. The overall length of the line, whose terminus in the west is at Golshahr , is of 41 km. The terminus in the east is located at Teheran (Sadegieh) ; this station is also the terminus is line 2. The line comprises 12 stations on the whole and is traversed by trains with a 10 minutes frequency.

Developments in hand and planned

Line 1

It is expected that line 1 is, in the long term, long 28,1 km (of which the half in underground) and comprises 22 stations (including 15 in underground). Contrary to the initial plans of 1970 the prolongation should be done towards north. The origin of this change is related to the strong growth of the population of the city which led the experts to recommend this extension. The line should finish at the station of the place Tajrish . Work is completed by Chinese company CITIC (selected in 2002). Today discussions are in hand to be able to finance the prolongation of 8 km (7 stations), which should be carried out in 2 stages (2006 and 2008). A prolongation towards the south to the airport Iman-Khomeini is also under study.

Line 2

It is envisaged to prolong line 2 with a junction: the new termini would be in the suburbs of Damavand and Pardis.

Line 3

It is envisaged to increase the network of the subway of Teheran by creating the line 3 which must go from North East to the Western South. The overall length envisaged is of 37 km: 24 km will be in underground and will serve 22 stations and 13 km will be on the surface and will serve 10 stations. The first section goes from Madjideh to the east until Javadieh to the West of or it should be prolonged towards Sharyar.

Line 4

Line 4 is also at advanced stages of planning. It must be entirely in underground except for a station and 1 km of way. The line an overall length of 20 km must comprise 21 stations. The first section will ensure the connection between the station of Teheran Nau the east and the place Azadi in the west. From this station the line should be prolonged to the airport dedicated to the internal lines.

Developments with longer terms

The creation of the following lines is also envisaged:

  • Line 6: of Bokharaei in the south east in Sadeghieh in western north

  • Line 7: of Yousef abad in North, to Takhti Stadium in the south east
  • the Line 8 and 9 circulars must connect between them the suburbs
