Subway of Tachkent

The Subway of Tachkent, capital of the Ouzbékistan, is the only underground railway network in Central Asia, open with 9 stations on November 6th 1977 after 9 years of work. Today, the network has 3 lines ( Tchilanzar (since 1977), Ouzbékistan (1984) and Younous-Abad (2001)) with 36 stations, adding up 39,1 km of ways. The 4th line ( Seguili ) is planned for 2010-2012. In 2000, the custom of the subway of Tachkent was of 93 million passengers per annum. Today it would have reached more than 125 million passengers per annum. The subway of Tachkent is sumptuously decorated with noble materials (Marbre, Granite, cast iron, Bronze, etc), and no station does not resemble itself. Much of them whose names had a communist or Russian reference was re-elected after the indépendence (September 1st 1991), the decorations with reasons evoking the Soviet past were also dismantled. The stations currently bear the names of the poets, the Uzbek statesmen or the places towards which they give access.

The tunnel of the subway of Tachkent is designed to support the earthquakes going up to 10 degrees according to the scale of Richter. It can also be used as nuclear shelter. The subway is regarded as a strategic site, to make photographs or there to film is strictly prohibited by the omnipresent police force.
