Subway of Saint-Pétersbourg
The Métro of Saint Petersbourg () is the joint transport system of the city Saint Petersbourg in Russia. This subway shows typical characteristics of the subways of the old Soviet Union: decoration, monumental aspect. Because of the geology of the basement of the city, the subway of Saint-Pétersbourg circulates with very great depth. The subway transports 3,43 million passengers daily.
The Network
The network comprises 4 lines (and a fifth in construction) 59 stations for a total of 102 km ways. The majority of the stations are located at great depth. However three stations are at a shallow depth and 3 others are on the surface.
¹ the line n° 5 should not open before 2008
The design of the stations has several times advanced. The first stations were with " pylône". From the Sixties a new design called " elevator horizontal" became popular but it does not succeed in being essential and as from the middle of the Seventies, the stations of the " type; room forte" became most numerous.
The subway of Saint-Petersbourg is the only subway of the old Soviet Union to serve zones located outside the limits of the city (in Oblast of Leningrad).
History
The foregrounds for the construction of a Saint-Petersbourg subway exist since 1889 but underground Saint-Petersbourg construction proved to be difficult because of the underground rivers and the cavities. The wars and the revolutions froze the project on several occasions.
The history of the network goes back to 1940 when construction began from a line connecting between them all the railway stations terminus. The line was inaugurated in 1955 between the terminal of Moskovkiy rail and the industrial park of Kirovskiy located at the Western South. The first stations were most beautiful of all the network. The following years the known network of many developments and became the second network of Russia.
Operation
The subway functions of 6:00 of the morning to 1:00. At the rush hour, there is 1 subway every 95 seconds, the remainder of the day there is an oar every 4 minutes. Because of the underground rivers of the basement of Saint-Pétersbourg, certain stations are equipped along the quay with metal doors which open only when the oar arrives and that its doors open.
Material
The subway is served by 1403 cars which form 188 oars. The network comprises 5 deposits.
Future developments
It is expected that the subway increases considerably during the half century to come. The Pravoberezhnaya line will be divided into 2008 and a Kupchinsko-Primorskaya new line with a new section in the South and by taking again the section of the Pravoberezhanya line. Thereafter, a circular line should be built as well as other radial lines passing by the downtown area. The Pravoberezhnaya line should also extend towards western north under the Golfe from Finland.
