Subway of Rome

The Métro of Rome (“Metropolitana”) was open in 1955. The subway of Rome includes/understands two lines (has and B) in exploitation: the line B is in the course of prolongation, a third line (the line C, which will be automatic) is under development and a fourth line (D) is in project.

The subway of Rome is managed by company MET.RO (Metropolitana di Roma spa) controlled by the municipality of Rome and the area.

The offer of public transport heavy in Rome is supplemented by 3 railway lines of surface also controlled by MET.RO and 7 railway lines regional FR1 with FR7 (FR: Ferrovie Regionali) primarily serving the Roman agglomeration managed by the Italian railroad company (FS). All these lines are usable within the framework of a unified tariff unit.

The Subway

The network of the Métro 38 km is long (2005). The 2 lines cross at the station Termini, principal station of the railroads (FS) in Rome.

The line has (27 stations and 18,4km) connects the west of Rome close to the the Vatican to the popular suburbs of south-east. On the basis of the terminus of Battistini, the principal stops are: Ottaviano-San Pietro (Saint-Pierre) for the museums of the the Vatican and the Basilica Saint-Pierre, Piazza di Spagna which serve the place of Spain, the station of Termini, San Giovanni for the Basilique Midsummer's Day of Lateran, Cinecittà for the city of the cinema and the Anagnina terminus. The line is completely underground except a bridge on the the Tiber. Work was strongly slowed down by the archaeological discoveries.

With 22 stations on the whole, the line B (19 km including 13 km in underground) connects Laurentina to the south of Rome with Rebibbia in north. The principal stops are: EURO Fermi, in the district built for the World Fair (EURO) of 1942 which never took place, Basilica San Paolo (Saint-Paul), which serves the Basilique Saint-Paul-out-the-walls, Piramide which gives access the station of Ostiense, the pyramid of Caius Sextus and the Testaccio, Circo Massimo (Cirque Maxime) which serves the seat of FAO, Colosseo (station of the Colisée), Termini, the main station of Rome, Tiburtina, for the station of suburbs of the same name, and Bridges Mammolo for the coach station.

The total traffic is approximately 750.000 passengers per day on average. The rush hours, the service road is ensured by an oar every 4 minutes.

Prolongations in progress

A junction on the line B (B1) must be inaugurated with the autumn 2010: it includes/understands 4 new stations between Bologna and Conca d' Oro (3,8 km). A prolongation of the line B beyond Rebibbia is also planned.

The line of surface " Roma- Pantano " (17.8 km) must be converted to become the future line C of the subway (trains without driver). For this purpose, it must be prolonged towards North by an underground section passing by the Center Town and near the the Vatican. Once completed, it should make 30 km length and include/understand 35 stations. The calendar of the project is the following (updated in January 2006):

  • San Giovanni - Alessandrino: at the end of 2012
  • Venezia - Pantano: at the end of 2013
  • Clodio - Venezia: mid 2015

It is envisaged to build a fourth underground line, the line D, whose layout will be about parallel to that of the line B (Northern of the city towards the EURO), while serving other districts of the center, by 2015.

The basement of the capital, rich in vestiges, undoubtedly lends itself less better to work than that of other cities. There is of it a quasi documentary outline in the film Fellini Roma where one attends impotent the instantaneous disappearance of splendid frescos, in contact with the air brought by the unforeseen boring of the walls of an ancient residence.

Preliminary works had been engaged in the Années 1930, but had been quickly stopped because of the archaeological constraints. One can realize of the importance of work to be carried out while seeing to lengthen the times of construction, not only because of the problems of financing.

Lines of surface managed by SUBWAY

Three railway lines of surface are also managed by the company MET.RO. They mainly serve the city and partially the suburbs:

  • the line " Roma Lido " connect the Ostiense station and the EURO to the coastal area and the district of Ostie. It serves in particular the ruins of Ostia Antica.

  • the line " Roma Nord" connect the Flaminio esplanade to the Northern suburbs. Certain trains are prolonged until Viterbo.

  • the line " Roma Pantano" connect the suburbs Is at the station " Termini ". This line must belong to the new line C of the subway.

The total traffic of these three lines is approximately 200.000 passengers per day. The service road is ensured at a rate of a train per fifteen minutes.

Lines of surface of Ferrovie Regionali (regional Railroads)

Rome in addition has a network of railway line managed by the Italian national company of the railroads (FS) which serve primarily the suburbs of Rome. They are the lines Fr:

Line FR1 - Orte - station Ostiense-aereoport Tiburtina-station of Fiumicino
