Subway of Kyōto
The Métro of Kyoto (in Japanese 京都市営地下鉄, Kyōto-shiei chikatetsu i.e. municipal subway of Kyoto ) is the joint transport system of the town of Kyōto and is managed with the network of bus by the department of municipal transport. The subway is open 5:30 to 23:30, the frequency is according to the hour from 4 to 7 minutes 30.
The network of the subway comprises 2 lines.
The Karasuma line
The line Karasuma (烏丸線 Karasuma-SEN) goes from the South to North and is connected to the railway network of Kintetsu-Kyōto which serves Nara. The line makes 13,7 km length. The opening of the first section between the stations of Kyōto and Kitaoji took place in 1981. The last prolongation was brought into service in 1997. The line serves 15 stations of which the main station of Kyoto.
The Tōzai line
The line Tōzai (京都市営地下鉄東西線 Kyōto shi-I.E.(internal excitation) chikatetsu tōzai-SEN) goes from the South East to a point located at the east of the city before taking a East-West direction (tōzai) and crossing the center town. The line 12,7 km is long.The section was open on October 12th, 1997 and transports daily approximately 120.000 travellers. The section between Keihan-Sanjo and Yamashina formed part in the beginning of the network of the " Keihan Electric Railway ". Trains of the Keihan network circulate in the tunnel of the subway of the station of Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae until Yamashina and with until Ōtsu. As part of the line was in the beginning a tram line, the subway trains circulate at certain places in the middle of the street.
All the stations are accessible by the people in wheel chair. At each station a color is associated to facilitate its recognition. The access to the trains is made safe by landing doors installed on the quays which open only when the quay is in station.
Features
The track gauge is standard (1 435 mm). The lines comprise 2 ways systematically and are fed in 1500 Volts. The quays of the stations make 175 meters length at least. The oars comprise 6 cars and circulate at a maximum speed of 90 km/h.
Future extensions
The Western section must be prolonged of Nijo with Nishioji-Tenjin (2,4 km length and 2 new stations) in 2007. This section could be prolonged thereafter of 10 km until Rakusia.It is possible that the Karasuma line is prolonged of Takeda until Rakunan.
