Subway of HongKong
MTR or Farmhouse Transit Railway (地鐵; originally, 地下鐵路; or 地下鐵) is the principal transport system of mass to HongKong. Since the opening of first service MTR in 1979, the network extended and includes today seven lines. Other extensions are already planned. The MTR is a very popular public transport system in HongKong, with an average of 2,45 million voyages per day.
This popularity is due mainly to the effectiveness and the accessible cost of the MTR. For example, a voyage in taxi of Tsing Yi (in the north of the airport) with Causeway Bay (on the island of HongKong) costs approximately 200 $HK, whereas the same voyage in MTR costs 11,8 $HK.
The integration of the system of charts without contact Octopus in the MTR in September 1997 particularly improved the ease of use of the MTR.

History of the MTR
Summary
The construction of MTR was required by a study ordered by the government in 1967. The Gouvernement of HongKong ordered this study in order to find solutions with the problem of the increase in the traffic caused by the expansion of the economy of HongKong. Construction started as of the publication of the study, and the first line was open in 1979. The MTR was immediately popular near the residents of HongKong, which involved the construction of additional lines in order to cover more territory. There are continual debates on how and where to extend network MTR. Several proposals were proposed, but none was still accepted. The two most plausible projects are the Ligne West Island and the Ligne South Island, but will not be realized before many years. In 2000, the MTR Corporation which belonged to the government was partially privatisée and re-elected MTR Corporation Limited. The MTR Corporation was always carried out near the railway stations in order to benefit on the one hand from those, but also from the railway lines they-even. Many recent stations were installed in great commercial complexes or in lower part of residential zone. Free from this type of construction can be seen at the station Tsing Yi, which is built close to the shopping mall Maritime Public garden and directly in lower part to the residential zone Tierra Verde.
Original proposal
During the Years 1960, the Gouvernement of HongKong felt the need to manage the increase in the road traffic predicts if the economy of HongKong continued to strongly increase. The cabinet of consultants English, Freeman, Fox, Wilbur Smith & Associates, were indicated to study the transport system of HongKong. The consultants published a report HongKong Mass Transport Study in September 1967, which proposed the construction of a system of subway allowing of the transport of mass in HongKong.
In 1970, an underground grid composed of four lines was planned in a new report/ratio of the same consultants HongKong Mass Transit: Further Studies . These four lines were the Ligne Kwun Tong , the Ligne Tsuen Wan , the line Island and the line East Kowloon. However the lines were differently built from those initially proposed by the " HongKong Farmhouse Study" Transport; (a chart representing the lines envisaged in the beginning can be seen here).
In 1972, the government of HongKong authorizes the construction of the Initial System , a system of 20 kilometers which corresponds today to the Ligne Kwun Tong (except the extension towards Tiu Keng Leng). Negotiations with four great consortium made up of major of construction started in 1973. The intention of the government was to submit a complete project, based on the British model, by fixing the price. A consortium Japanese signed an agreement for the construction of the system to the beginning of the year 1974, but in December of the same year, this one withdrew agreement.
The Modified Initial System
Several weeks later, beginning 1975, an government agency known under the name of “Farmhouse Transport Provisional Authority” (reads. provisional authority of the transport of masses) was founded to deal with the project. She announced that the initial system should be slightly reduced to 15,6 kilometers and re-elected it in “Modified Initial System” (reads. Modified Initial system). The project of single contract was also abandoned with the profit of 25 contracts for engineering and 10 contracts for electricity and mechanics.
Moreover, the government enterprise “HongKong Mass Transit Railway Corporation” (MTRC) was created to replace the agency “Farmhouse Transport Provisional Authority”. (It was about the company which yielded its place to MTR Corporation Limited on June 30th 2000)
The construction of the modified system started in November 1975. After approximately four years, the northern section was finished on September 30th 1979, it opened its doors on October 1st 1979, with trains circulating of Shek Kip Mei with Kwun Tong. The section of Tsim Sha Tsui in Shek Kip Mei opened in the month December same year.
In 1980 took place the first crossing of the Port Victoria by a train of the MTR when the Ligne Kwun Tong was extended to the station Chater now called Central. The trains were also increased with six cars.
Line Tsuen Wan
The government approved the construction of the Ligne Tsuen Wan in 1977, later known under the name of extension Tsuen Wan, work began in November 1978. The project added a section of 10,5 kilometers to system MTR, Prince Edward with Tsuen Wan. The line entered in service on May 10th 1982. The total costs of construction were of 4,1 billion $HK (price not adjusted on current quotation).
When the line entered in service, the section of the line Kwun Tong de Chater with Argyle] (today Mong Kok) was transferred to the Line Tsuen Wan . Thus, Waterloo (Yau My Tei) became the terminus of the Line Kwun Tong and Argyle and Prince Edward became stations of change. This change was made because the traffic on the Ligne Tsuen Wan owed, according to the forecasts, being higher than that on the Line Kwun Tong . This forecast was correct initially, however, since the opening of the Line Tung Chung in 1998, majority of the traffic in the North-West of Lai King with HongKong was moved on the new line.
Although acquisitions were made, the station of Tsuen Wan West was never built. The site is partially occupied today by KCR West Rail which has the station Tsuen Wan West, more close to the coast.

The approval of the government for the construction of the Line of the island (Island Line) was given in December 1980. Construction started in October 1981. May 31st 1985, the Line of the island (Island Line) was open between the stations Admiralty and Wan wine storehouse. The station Admiralty and Exchange became also exchangers with the Line Tsuen Wan . Moreover, each train was extended to 8 coaches.
May 23rd 1986, the service reaches the station Sheung Wan. The construction of this station was differed one year because the offices of the government were with the top of the station and that they last being moved before the beginning of construction.
extension of the tunnel of Eastern Harbor
In 1984, the government approves the construction of tunnel of Eastern Harbor, a tunnel which will be used by the cars and the trains of the MTR. The Ligne Kwun Tong was extended between Harbor and Quarry Bay, which became a station of exchange with the Line Kwun Tong and the Line of the island (Island Line) . The extension was open it August 5th 1989. An intermediate station, Lam Chock, was brought into service it 1 er October 1989.

The decision, in October 1989 to build a new international airport with Chek Lap Kok on Lantau island in order to replacing it international airport of Kai Tak which was over-populated invited the MTR Corporation to build a railway line, then indicated under the name of Lantau Airport Railway driving with the airport. But construction did not start before the governments Chinese and British do not regulate their financial and territorial dissensions in November 1994.
With final, the new line was included in the plans of financing of new international airport of HongKong, this one not being regarded as viable without direct links with public transport. The costs of constructions were then shared by the MTR which made great developments in the plans of construction of the new stations.
The railroad of the airport of Lantau was divided then into two line of MTR, the Line Tung Chung and L Airport Express train . L Airport Express was inaugurated it July 6th 1998 at the same time as the new airport. The Ligne Tung Chung was officially open it June 21st 1998 by Tung Chee Hwa, and the service began the next day.
Work of Unballasting of Quarry Bay
Work of unballasting to relieve the congestion of Quarry Bay forced to extend the Line Kwun Tong on the side of the island of HongKong of Quarry Bay in North Not via a tunnel of 4,2 kilometers. The project was started because of a clogging of Quarry Bay and of the laments of the passengers in connection with the five minutes of walk of the Line of the island (Island Line) with the Line Kwun Tong . Construction began in September 1997 and was supplemented in September 2001 for 3 billion $HK.
Line Tseung Kwan O
The construction of the Ligne Tseung Kwan O was approved on August 18th 1998 to serve new dwellings. Construction began on April 24th 1999 and the line opened officially in 2002. The line follows the rails of the Line Kwun Tong with the tunnel of the east, and goes from Po Lam in North Not. Consequently, the Ligne Kwun Tong was extended to Tiu Keng Leng on the new line. The cost of construction partially was supported by the government of HongKong, and by funds deprived to benefit from the construction of the line by commercially developing surfaces until under developed because badly served there by transport.

Whereas the construction of the Ligne Tung Chung was still in hand, a plan of construction of a line of MTR serving the western north of HongKong. Space was reserved in order to add a station of exchange and two additional ways were created between Olympic and Lay King in order to authorize direct services towards Airport Express train. Originally known under the name of Airport Railway Phase 2,
the contracts of West Rail Interfaces Works was gained can after the beginning of the construction of West Rail. The project included/understood the exchanger Mei Foo Interchange (modification of the station Mei Foo on the Line Tsuen Wan in order to provide a pedestrian bond to the station Mei Foo pertaining to the line West Rail; The station Nam Cheong (a station of exchange on the Line Tung Chung , carried out jointly by MTRC and KCRC) and the 4-Alignment Works (two ways additional the 4 km length authorizes the trains of the Line Tung Chung to be stopped in Nam Cheong without preventing the passage of the trains of L Airport Express train ).
Work was completed in several stages. Trains of the Ligne Tung Chung can roll on this new way of then mid- May 2003, whereas the exchanger of the station Mei Foo and the station Nam Cheong was at the same time open as the opening to the public of the line West Rail in December 2003.
Privatization of MTR
October 5th 2000, MTR became the first railway company privatized of HongKong, which marked the beginning of the initiative of the government to withdraw its interests of many state enterprises. Before its entry with Exchange Stock, MTR belonged entirely to the government. Approximately a billion actions were sold, and MTR has today the greatest number of shareholders of all the companies of HongKong. In June 2001, MTR entered to the index Hang Seng.
At the time of the public offering, MTR had a budgetary surplus of 360 million $HK, it was of 278 million in 1997. However, MTR losing many of its contributions of the government, the surplus fell to 139 million. Today, this tendency seems reversed, making MTR one of some transport companies of profitable people in the world.
La safety of the MTR
Varied measures are taken to help with the security of system MTR. Advertizing campaigns show information on subjects such as the safety of escalators which are a constant of any station of MTR and advertisements are regularly carried out in order to recall the safety regulations to the travellers.
Codes of conduct were recently introduced in order to avoid potentially dangerous actions on the MTR such as the prohibition of flammable goods in the MTR as well as the prohibition of the scuffles during the closing of the doors and prohibition to eat or drink in the train. Sanction S going from simple amends to sorrows of imprisonment were defined in the event of failure with these rules.
The Line Tung Chung , L Airport Express train and the Line Tseung Kwan O , except for the stations of the line Quarry Bay, has separate quays of the way by transparent panels installed over construction. These doors prevent that people fall on the rails and separate the stations from the tunnels, thus allowing substantial savings in energy used by the air conditioning and the ventilation of the tunnels. Doors were also installed in the stations Sunny Bay and Disneyland Arises. Their size is half less high than the preceding panels and avoid only with people falling on the rails.
Équipement, installation and services of the stations
With the elevated level of frequentation day laborer of the stations MTR, those Ci are conceived for accessibility and durability. Elevator the S and escalator S are respectively conceived and installed by Otis Elevator Company/Fujitec and Industrial premises of the Mediterranean /Otis Elevator Company.
System MTR is in general of access easy to handicap are, the trains have the spaces dedicated to the wheel chairs, the stations have markings out of the ground to guide to them blind men on the platforms, and there are broad entries for the wheel chairs.
Contrary to many subways, the stations of the principal lines of MTR do not have easy accesses to the toilets. only stations of the lines Airport Express and Ligne Disneyland Resort has some.

Shops and others services
Until a recent date, stations MTR had only counters of Hang Seng Bank and shops of Maxim' S Cakes bought by Jardine Matheson. Since the privatization of MTR, many shops settled in the stations, transforming them into mini shopping malls. The services of the majority of the stations include/understand:
* of the counters and distributers of Hang Seng Bank
* of the distributers of Bank off Clouded
* of the shops of 7-Eleven and Circle K
Put aside the shops, there are also dentists and clinical S, dry cleaners and florists on the Line Tseung Kwan O . One finds there also phone boxes, distributers of food and photomaton S.
Newspapers
Since 2005, three free newspapers are offered in the stations MTR, it Metropolis Daily, published by International Metro , the magazine Hui Kai Guides (去街 Guide), and the newspaper of job offers Jiu Jik (招職) published by South China Morning Post.

L Airport Express offers also services to added-value with the travellers of the line. Toilets and points of recording are available to each station of the line. Lastly, a service of free buses transports the travellers of the various stations towards their hotel S respective.
Tarifs and tickets
Contrary to certain subways, where a fixed price is paid whatever the distance covered, a surplus is paid for all the additional stations crossed between the initial station and the final station. The tariffs of the tickets for an adult ranges between 4 $HK and 26 $HK.
Ticket for only one voyage
The magnetic ticket is used for tickets with the voyage. These tickets prepaid for voyages between predetermined stations are usable only for one voyage. There are no tickets for the safe return for L Airport Express train .
===Les Octopus=== charts

: Principal Article: Octopus Chart
The Octopus chart is a chart without refillable contact used for the electronic payment in HongKong. It was launched in September 1997 for the use of MTR and the KCR, and now it is largely used in the transactions in HongKong.
The Octopus chart uses technology thus RFID, the users need only to approach their chart near the reader. The physical contact is thus not necessary. The Octopus chart became so popular that many cities such as Singapore, London and Taipei adopted the idea, while launching their own versions of the chart, named respectively EZ-link, Oyster card, and EasyCard.
Except for L Airport Express train , tariffs MTR is slightly less less expensive during the use of the Octopus chart in comparison of the ticket to the voyage. For example, the cost of the voyage 3 minutes between Admiralty and Tsim Sha Tsui is of (during 2005) 7,9 $HK by using the chart Octopus card, compared with 9 $HK for a ticket with the voyage.
Pass for touristes
There exist two types of step for the tourists: a first which authorizes an unlimited number of voyages for only one day and a second which authorizes a number of unlimited voyage during 3 days on the MTR.
The tourists must prove their statutes (passports…) when they buy the step and constantly if they are controlled.
Les tickets Airport Express train
Tickets for L Airport Express is slightly different from those of the other principal lines. Except for the tickets with single voyage, of the tickets at the day (at the same price as the precedent) and of the tickets in the month are also available. Reductions also exist for the tickets bought by a group to travel.
In January 2005, a voyage on the {{subst: Airport Express train (MTR)} station HongKong at the station Airport cost 100 $HK.
Time of opening
The MTR is open 6:00 to 1:00. And the oars follow one another every two minutes the rush hours, and all the 5 to 10 minutes the remainder of the day.
Les trains of the MTR
Four types of different trains roll on the MTR.
Put aside coaches of L Airport Express train , all the trains is conceived so that they can face a strong density of traffic at the time of the stops. For example, the seats are placed along the coach, of the ventilators were placed in each coach and each coach has five doors on each side.
The Line Tung Chung and L Airport Express uses trains especially designed for them. These two variations are built jointly by Adtranz (maintaining a subsidiary company of Bomber Transport) and Construcciones there auxiliar of ferrocarriles.

The other lines operate by using the two other variations, known under the name of " M-Train" and of " K-Stock". The " M-Stock" (or " Cm-Stock") " M-Train" are the oldest trains on the MTR. Built originally by Camell Subway and refitted by United Goninan, the " M-Train" is the single variation using of the sliding doors. " K-Stock" as for them are built jointly by Mitsubishi and ROTEM.
line Disneyland Resort will use the " M-Trains" but with an appearance worked over again to agree with the atmosphere and the topic of the line. The windows of the line will have the shape of a head of Mickey and characters Bronze Disney will decorate the interior of the coaches.
Dépôts
Lignes West Island and South Island
: Principal Article: Lines West Island and South Island
January 21st 2003, MTR Limited Corporation received the permission to work out the plans of 2 new lines: the line West Island and the line South Island. These lines are suggested in Second Railway Development Study (RDS-2) in order to provide a direct link between the residential zones of Wah Fu and of Ap Lei Chau and it Central business district of HongKong.
Three proposals were submitted in the past to answer these plans. In these first proposals, feasibility studies conduirent at the optimization of the new lines on the external cost, benefit and the effects on the other means of transport. The plan was possibly declined by the government in favor of the construction of highway at the end March 2004.
MTR tries then a fourth test in February 2005. It consists of an extension of the Line of the island (Island Line) until Kennedy Town for the line West Island and in two sections of the line South Island. The legislative authorities support today the realization of the line West Island.
